We all feel it sometimes—that quiet exhaustion that doesn’t quite match the hours we’ve worked. The sense that the system we live inside was never really designed to reward original thought or pure creation. It rewards extraction. It feeds on the very energy that makes something new.

This isn’t a new observation, but it’s one that keeps surfacing as more people wake up. The metaphor that fits best is old and blunt: vampires. Not the Hollywood kind with capes, but the ones who cannot generate their own light. They attach, they siphon, they normalize the drain until the creator either burns out, sells out, or gets quietly erased from the story.

Nikola Tesla remains the clearest modern example. The man who gave us the foundation for alternating current, radio, remote control, and the vision of wireless power sat in hotel rooms in his later years, feeding pigeons and watching his patents expire while others profited. He had taken funding from J.P. Morgan for the Wardenclyffe Tower project—an attempt at global wireless transmission. When it became clear Tesla’s real aim included power that would be difficult to meter and bill for, the money stopped. The tower was eventually demolished for scrap. Tesla died in 1943 with modest ongoing support from Westinghouse and little else. After his death, the U.S. government’s Office of Alien Property seized his papers, citing wartime concerns over a supposed “death ray.” Some files were later returned or sent to his nephew; others remain unaccounted for.

Tesla wasn’t a bad businessman in the cartoon sense. He simply operated from a different operating system—one that still believed invention could serve humanity directly rather than first passing through a toll booth. The people who controlled the capital understood something he didn’t want to accept: a technology that cannot be easily metered threatens the entire architecture of control.

This pattern repeats across professions that present themselves as noble. Consider the long road to becoming a doctor. Years of expensive university training, often supported by family resources or taxpayer-backed loans and grants. The young physician emerges carrying debt and the genuine desire to help. Yet the system they enter is structured around volume, procedures, and prescriptions. Continuing medical education is frequently sponsored or heavily influenced by pharmaceutical companies. Studies and reports have shown that exposure to industry representatives and sponsored content correlates with increased prescribing of branded, more expensive medications—even when equally effective generics exist. The doctor, now inside the machine, becomes a reliable conduit. Patients receive ongoing prescriptions for chronic conditions that generate recurring revenue for the larger pharmaceutical interests. Taxpayers and insurance pools continue funding the cycle. The individual doctor may feel they are simply practicing medicine, yet the incentives and information streams pull toward management of symptoms rather than root resolution. The bigger vampires—those who own the drug pipelines and distribution—stay well fed.

The same architecture appears in education and academia. Students and their families (or taxpayers through public funding) invest heavily in years of training to become professors or teachers. Once inside, the structure offers remarkable stability: tenure in many cases provides near-lifetime employment security, generous benefits, and eventual pensions drawn from public resources. Research grants—often taxpayer-funded through agencies and universities—support travel to conferences around the world under the banner of advancing knowledge. Yet the reproducibility crisis in science has revealed that large portions of published research across psychology, biomedicine, and other fields cannot be reliably replicated. Billions in funding have supported work that later proves difficult to confirm or translate into meaningful real-world progress. The “publish or perish” culture rewards novel, positive results over careful, replicable inquiry. Many studies serve primarily to justify further grants, more travel, and career advancement rather than delivering breakthroughs that challenge entrenched interests. The professor or researcher, often sincere in their corner of the work, still operates within a system that extracts steady resources from the public while producing outputs that frequently maintain rather than disrupt the status quo. The mid-level vampires receive their cut—salary, security, prestige—while feeding the larger pattern.

These are not accusations against every individual doctor, teacher, or researcher. Many enter these fields with authentic service in their hearts and do real good within the constraints they inherit. The point is structural. The training pipelines, funding mechanisms, incentive systems, and information flows were largely designed by and for the vampires at the top. The professionals in the middle become both feeders and fed—taking from the public purse and from the vitality of patients and students while channeling resources and compliance upward.

On a deeper level, this arrangement sustains the energetic harvest. Managed chronic illness keeps large populations in states of low vitality, recurring fear, and dependency. Educational systems that prioritize compliance, credentialing, and debt over genuine critical thinking and sovereignty produce citizens who accept the matrix as normal. Both generate a steady supply of the emotional and creative energy that the larger pattern appears to require.

Yet the spell is breaking. More physicians are stepping outside the pharmaceutical-dominated model toward functional, integrative, and root-cause approaches. More educators are questioning the factory model of schooling and exploring unschooling, critical pedagogy, and direct transmission of real skills and discernment. These individuals are not abandoning their professions—they are remembering why they entered them and refusing to keep feeding the extraction machine with their full creative and ethical energy.

The new creators, whether in technology, healing, education, or the arts, are learning to operate differently. They protect their own vitality first. They create from direct connection to source rather than from the circulating pool of already-harvested ideas and funding. They form smaller, more sovereign circles where value can flow without constant tolls. They withdraw their best work from platforms and institutions designed primarily to harvest attention and data.

Tesla’s life is often told as a tragedy. It can also be read as a transmission. He showed what happens when a high-frequency mind tries to operate inside a low-frequency control grid without sufficient protection or sovereignty. The lesson for us isn’t to become more cynical. It’s to become more discerning about where our creative current actually flows—and to stop offering it so freely to structures that cannot generate light of their own.

The vampires—personal, institutional, and energetic—only have power where we remain open and unshielded. The moment we remember how to generate from the inside out, to protect what is sacred, and to give our best work only where it can land cleanly, the old architecture begins to lose its food source.

That is the real rebellion. Not fighting the vampires on their terms, but simply ceasing to be such reliable livestock. The quiet room, the walk in nature, the direct relationship with students or patients, the idea that arrives in solitude—these are still available. The question is whether we have learned enough to keep what comes through us and let it change the field rather than being changed by it.

The age of the drained genius, the captured healer, and the tenured maintainer is ending. The age of the sovereign creator—who knows both how to receive and how to guard what has been received—is just beginning.
