When it comes to hosting a family get-together, keeping the costs under control while showcasing your wonderful skills as the hosts are the ultimate aim. You want to host a memorable event without burning a hole in your pocket. But it can be challenging to do if you have a large family event to take care of. The costs can pile up high if you're not careful beforehand.
There are many ways to create a fun family get-together without breaking the bank. You have to plan it the right way. And, to help you do that, here are a few ideas to help you have a great family time without overstepping the budget.
1. Plan the Menu and Use Plastic Utensils
The menu for the get-together depends on the theme of the party. If it's in honor of a particular family member, choose their favorite cuisine and keep their preferred dishes on the menu. You can consider having an outdoor party with lots of grilling and ask the guests to come with a dish they cooked. And, cleaning up after a party is already a big task to handle. So, there is no need to add to that work by using regular cutlery and dishes.
Go for plastic utensils and paper plates. Besides, if it's a casual outdoor family get-together, your family members wouldn't even mind eating on paper plates with plastic forks and spoons. Open a bottle of Malbec or two, and have a great time.
2. Consider the Theme of the Get-Together
Deciding on a theme for the party doesn't mean going extravagant. It's about making the get-together more attractive. The theme can depend on the occasion you are celebrating: a birthday, engagement, anniversary, or graduation. It can also be a significant event in the family, be it someone's leaving for college or moving out of the country. You can decide on the decorations and food depending on that event.
If it's not the case of any particular family event and all about the family getting together after a long time, you can go creative with your theme. For instance, you can have a western or rustic theme and ask people to dress up as cowboys and cowgirls.
3. Decide On the Guestlist For The Party
Since it is challenging to decide a guestlist for a family get-together, there is quite a dilemma regarding who to invite and how to invite them. Now, you are pretty clear that family members would make up the guest list. Decide on whether you want to invite girlfriends or boyfriends, or other people are almost like family. It entirely depends on how close you're to those other people.
It’s perfectly fine to create a Facebook event and invite the guests from there in terms of inviting them. Nowadays, no one waits to get actual printed invitations in the mailbox. But, as warm and welcoming hosts, you should also call or text them once before the party.
4. Think of Enjoyable Activities for the Family
One way to make a family get-together even more exciting than ever is to provide games or other such activities. Just like food, you can consider your theme for the game ideas, too. For instance, for a western or rustic theme, have activities like lasso toss, where players will have to rope their lasso through specific objects to win. Also, let the kids have fun riding stick horses.
Family get-togethers are also great opportunities to relive old memories. So, bring out those old albums and discuss those beautiful family stories. Ask the guests to bring the old family photos they have in their collection.
5. Go DIY For the Party Decorations to Use
You don't have to rent or buy party decorations since you can easily make a few simple ones at home. Why spend extra money when you can take the DIY route? The decorations that you use for the party also have to be in line with the theme, such as a cowboy hat-stand or large 'Wanted' posters on the walls.
Look around for old decorative pieces left in the house from the earlier parties you've hosted. Get some art and craft supplies from the nearest store, create new elements, or recycle the old ones. You will find plenty of video tutorials online to help you out in this regard. If you're unable to reuse or create any suitable decoration, head to an affordable store near you and get a few items.
There are ways to make every department of the party fit within the budget. You need to be smart about the planning and decide on the details ahead of time. So, now go ahead and put these ideas to fair use and have a gala time with your family and make this get together memorable.
