Stop Asking Permission to Take Your Life Back

Stop Asking Permission to Take Your Life Back

“Discover why your cargo was never theirs” ~Crystal Wind

This essay takes an obscure instrument of maritime law and turns it into a precise metaphor for the moment a person stops waiting to be deputized. The history is real; the application is interior. What changes is not the appetite to take, but the warrant that says the taking is recovery rather than theft.

Your Inner Letter of Marque

From privateers on the high seas to the soul that finally claims its own cargo

A letter of marque was never romance. It was a piece of paper.

In the age of sail a crown or a congress could hand a private shipowner a commission — a letter of marque and reprisal — and overnight the same man who would have been hanged as a pirate became an instrument of the state. He could cross a border. He could take a prize. He could keep a share of what he seized, provided an admiralty court later agreed the capture was lawful. Without that paper he was an outlaw. With it he was, at least on paper, authorized.

The Mark You Were Allowed to Pass

The word marque comes from the old idea of a boundary, a mark you were allowed to pass. Reprisal meant you were permitted to take back what had already been taken from you. The two ideas fused because almost no one wanted only one of them. You needed permission both to leave the safe harbor and to recover what the other side had already stolen.

England used them. France used them. The young United States wrote the power straight into the Constitution and used it in the Revolution, the Quasi-War with France, and the War of 1812. Congress has not issued one in earnest since the Civil War. The 1856 Declaration of Paris tried to bury the practice. The clause is still sitting there in Article I, unused, like an old commission folded in a drawer.

That is the history. The spiritual part is quieter, and it does not need a navy.

The Harbor We Were Taught to Keep

Most of us were never given a paper that said we were allowed to take our own lives back. We were taught to stay inside the harbor. Be useful. Don’t seize anything that doesn’t already have someone else’s name on it. Don’t cross the mark. If something was taken from you — years, voice, health, the particular light you came in with — you were supposed to file it under character-building and keep sailing under someone else’s flag.

The Difference Was Never the Act

The difference between a pirate and a privateer was never the act. It was the authorization.

A pirate takes because he can. A privateer takes because he has been commissioned to recover what was lost, and he answers to a court afterward. One is hunger without a warrant. The other is hunger with a warrant.

Spiritual work, when it is honest, is closer to the second.

There Is an Inner Letter of Marque

There is an inner letter of marque. It is not issued by a government and it will not survive an AI detector or a committee. It arrives as a knowing that you are no longer required to leave your own cargo in other people’s holds. You are permitted to cross the old boundary — the one that said your time, your attention, your tenderness, your anger, your gifts belonged to the family system, the job, the church, the algorithm, the partner who never quite saw you. Reprisal, in this sense, is not revenge. It is the lawful recovery of what was already yours.

Prize Law Still Applies

You do not have to become cruel to do it. Privateers still had rules. Prize law existed. A capture that was only greed could be thrown out. The inner version is the same. You do not get to plunder other people’s light and call it awakening. You get to stop handing yours over. You get to board the wrecks of old agreements and take back the pieces of yourself that were treated as salvage.

When the Commission Feels Like Forgery

Some days the commission feels official — a dream, a sentence in a book, a sudden refusal in the body that will not be argued with. Other days it feels like forgery. You wonder who you think you are. That is normal. The old world trained you to believe that only institutions could authorize force, even the quiet force of leaving.

You do not need Congress. You need the part of you that remembers why you incarnated, and that part has always had the seal.

The High Seas of This Century

The high seas of this century are not oceans. They are inboxes, family group chats, news cycles, spiritual marketplaces that sell you back your own soul in installments. Plenty of people are still pirating — taking attention, taking credit, taking peace — with no commission and no court. The work is not to become them. The work is to carry your own letter, written in a language only you can read, that says: you may pass the mark. You may recover what was taken. You may bring the prize home and let it be judged by your own conscience, not by the crowd on the dock.

That paper was never lost. It was waiting for you to stop asking the harbor master for permission to sail.

Author

Rowan Calder is an essayist and former maritime-history researcher who writes at the seam where old law meets inner life. After years in archives tracking letters of marque, prize courts, and forgotten commissions, Calder turned the same questions inward: who is allowed to cross a boundary, and who decided. Their work explores authorization, salvage, and the quiet force of leaving without becoming what you are leaving. Calder lives by water and teaches that conscience is the only admiralty court that still sits.
