Awen - The Ancient And Modern Super-Power

In the Celtic bardic tradition when a poet was filled with Awen – divine inspirational flow – they weren’t just acting as a messenger of the gods. As they spoke or sung those exalted words there was a very real sense that they took on the being and essence of what they were recounting. They were bringing it to life.
I find this idea incredibly encouraging in these times of tumult and uncertainty. As always, I and many others like me are asking, what can I do? As just one person, alone?
I’ve spoken a lot recently about returning to the basics of a spiritual life, rooted in the discipline of a simple, regular practice. It’s a radical act to choose to give attention to consciously releasing the chaotic effects of external voices and influences; to centre deep within yourself and your own values, and set an intention for your approach to life and the energy you want to bring to it. Every. Single. Day. With each repetition you embed yourself deeper and grow ever stronger in the certainty of who you really are and what you’re here to do.
But it’s never just about you, as beneficial as it undoubtedly is to your own well-being. As in the Celtic bardic tradition, when we practice bringing ourselves into alignment and at one-ness with those divine qualities, we begin to embody them; to actually and actively become them.
I’m sure, like me, you’ve had the memorable experience of being in a volatile situation where one person maintained their cool and was somehow able to calm and reassure everyone else, to prevent the escalation into panic or violence. It wasn’t that they had all the answers or a solution to whatever issue had kicked off the drama was it? It was simply as if they had poured oil on troubled waters and opened everyone up to considering a different approach. Doesn’t this sound like a very useful skill to have at your disposal right now?
I think we have this ability innately within us when we choose to consciously connect with it. In the early Welsh poetry by Taliesin, the most celebrated of ancient Awen-inspired poets, he refers explicitly to himself as all living things at some time or another; to have experienced what it is like to be all these varied life forms. Imagine the effect of walking into a room (real or virtual) full of confused, frightened, and angry people carrying with you the vibrations of love, peace, trust, and certainty. To be able simply with your presence to surround everyone with and remind them of the eternal unity we all possess at the soul level, which goes beyond any disparity or separation they may be experiencing in the moment. To enable them to feel seen, heard, and understood as an expression of Source energy – just another way to be each other.
Taliesin was also said to possess another gift of Awen, that of prophecy. Personally, as a psychic Tarot reader, I believe there is never a definitively set future outcome because that always depends on our individual choices – we are all co-creators of the future. But I can and do glimpse potentials, and I believe that is why I most often hear clients describing my readings as “inspirational” on their way out. (I like to feel myself as part of the bardic tradition too, which you might want to read more about in my article Language as a Vision of Life.) One of the greatest gifts we can give to the world right now is an active imagination, an irresistible vision of the very best we could be as a global human family, and the kind of compassionate social structures we could create to support and nurture every living being.
If you include this no holds barred, “What If?” type of visioning as part of your regular practice, then you carry that potential with you into your workplace, your high street, your school, your social circle. Not just the idea of it, but the essence of it. You become it to the extent that it’s a tangible and real possibility to those with whom you come into contact. Others can far more easily imagine this different version of the world because you are being it. They can engage in this vision with a sense of unity and a common desire for generating something better, rather than getting all tangled up in conflicting political views or religious beliefs which doesn’t even allow for listening to each other properly, let alone collaborating. Then, of course, you’re no longer one person alone.
So next time you catch yourself feeling helpless, small, and insignificant, remember your quiet super-power. Simply showing up to your spiritual practice every day with a willing heart is nothing short of radical, world-shifting magic. As Taliesin himself would tell you:
I’m a repository of song, I’m a dynamic state.”
“I sing inspiration, I bring it forth from the depth.”
If you’re inspired to read some of Taliesin’s works (and why wouldn’t you be?!) I can thoroughly recommend The Legendary Poems from the book of Taliesin by Marged Haycock.
