Why Breaking Bad Promises Is the First Step to Spiritual Freedom

Break This Promise to Set Yourself Free
We’ve all made promises we later regretted — a marriage that didn’t work out, a business deal we rushed into, or a friendship that no longer aligns with who we’ve become.
If you're a person of integrity, breaking a promise may feel like a failure, something to feel guilty about. But staying stuck in something that constricts you isn’t a virtue — it’s spiritual stagnation.
I recently heard the phrase, “A bad promise is better broken than kept.” This calls us to a higher spiritual standard than simply honoring earthly contracts. Many people enter marriages for the wrong reasons — they were too young, caught up in fantasy, pressured by family or religion, or driven by insecurity and loneliness.
None of these are good foundations for a lifelong commitment, and no one should suffer for years — or a lifetime — for a decision made from fear or illusion. One common reason people stay in such situations is the vow, “til death do us part.” But death is not just physical — relationships can die emotionally and spiritually, too.
Staying in a dead relationship is like re-enacting the movie Weekend at Bernie’s, where two men carry around their deceased boss to avoid suspicion. When you continue in a lifeless relationship, you're essentially carrying a corpse — one no longer serving you or anyone else. Your greatest gift to any relationship is your full aliveness.
Reframing the Past
If you’ve left a relationship based on a misguided promise, reframe it as a powerful learning experience. Many clients refer to their first marriages as “practice marriages,” having gone on to build healthier, more conscious relationships afterward.
And remember this spiritual truth: “There is no private good.” If a decision is truly good for you, it ultimately benefits everyone involved. Often, leaving creates space for the other person to grow beyond what was possible if you stayed. Some people have even been grateful to their former partners for leaving, as it liberated them to step into new and better lives.
If You’ve Been Left
If someone has left you, especially against your will, try reframing it as “rejection is protection” or “rejection is redirection.” Instead of focusing on loss, reflect on what you learned, how you've grown, and what new doors may now be opening.
Promises and Inner Guidance
None of this is to suggest that commitments should be taken lightly. In most cases, keeping a promise is an act of deep integrity. Often, we’re called to grow within challenges rather than abandon them. Always take time to pray, meditate, and reflect before making or breaking any promise.
But remember: not all promises were made from truth. Ask yourself:
- What was my state of mind when I made this promise?
- What is my state of mind now?
- Am I more in integrity by staying, or by leaving?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. No book can make your decisions for you. But there is a guide — your own inner teacher.
Spiritual Maturity and Self-Authority
My mentor once said, “Religion teaches obedience. Spirituality teaches self-discipline.” It’s easier to follow an external authority. But ultimately, spiritual maturity is about listening to the authority within — your higher self, your soul.
If you're going to make one promise, let it be this: promise yourself, your Higher Power, and your loved ones that you will live in alignment with your truest self. From there, every other promise you make will flow from authenticity and be blessed.
