GEMINI NEW MOON: A new lunar cycle begins when the Sun and Moon have their monthly rendezvous early this week.
The New Moon occurs at 8:02 p.m. PDT on Monday, May 26 (0302 UT May 27), when both luminaries are at 06°05' of Gemini.
A New Moon in the sign of the Twins represents an opportunity for new beginnings in the areas of communications, networking, teaching, and learning. With Messenger Planet Mercury being within four degrees of the lunation, the emphasis on a sharing of information, a search for intelligent solutions, and an openness to new ideas is underscored—both at the time of the New Moon and throughout the next two weeks at least. Gemini and its ruling planet Mercury are also known for their strong curiosity and an ongoing need for variety and mental stimulation, often through social relationships.
As we work with the New Moon energies, it is a good time for setting goals related to what we want to write, speak, teach, or learn over the next few weeks. We may also find ourselves being more interactive, drawn to share our thoughts and to learn from others. And, with the lunation in harmonious trine aspect with psychotherapist Pluto, conversations are far from superficial, truths are spoken, and secrets may be revealed.
CHIRON-ERIS CONJUNCTION: After building in influence since mid-January, a conjunction between Chiron and Eris perfects for the first time this week. This longer-term alignment unites the forces of the Wounded Healer and the Goddess of Discord.
When a new planet is discovered, astrologers learn about its effects by watching it over time. Dwarf planet Eris was discovered in 2005, so we have been monitoring its effects for only about 20 years. We learned a great deal about Eris when it conjoined Uranus in 2016, the year that marked the beginning of the #MeToo movement. We now understand that Eris in Aries is an instigator, bringing truths to light that stir controversy and ignite the fires of change.
Together, Chiron and Eris reveal uncomfortable realities and stir painful emotions. They reveal traumas and their causes, and expose wounds so that they can be seen, treated, and ultimately healed.
- HISTORICAL REFERENCES: The last time Chiron and Eris were conjunct was in 1971 and 1972, years when many coverups were exposed. In the U.S., the publishing of thePentagon Papers revealed the extent of the country's involvement in the Vietnam War, the truth of which had been hidden from its citizens. There was a court-martial of the U.S. soldiers involved in My Lai massacre in Vietnam, making public the atrocities of the war—made even more shocking because those involved were supposed to be "the good guys."
Also during this time, five White House operatives were arrested, events which began unraveling the lies that ultimately led to the Watergate scandal. And public outcry finally led to the banning of the pesticide DDT, which had been approved for widespread use by government agencies; exposure to the chemical was found not only to be killing bald eagles but also to cause cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems in humans.
A HEALING CRISIS: As the Chiron-Eris conjunction has been building over the past few months, much has already come into public awareness that has been shocking and painful. These revelations of what was previously hidden from view is causing a healing crisis. Many have felt the coursing of anguish and anger through their veins and heeded a call to take action, each in their own way.
At its core, the Chiron-Eris conjunction is compelling us to acknowledge and tend to the wounds caused by the shadow side of Aries. These include:
- Egotism, willfulness, arrogance
- An inability to cooperate or to let others lead
- Competitiveness, a belief that might equals right
- Insensitivity, rudeness, self-centeredness
- Impatience, impulsiveness, rash or foolhardy actions
- Aggressive and bullying behaviors, ruthlessness, violence
As the Chiron-Eris alignment perfects this week—and with the Sun, Mercury, and Venus activating its energies, too—there may be more revelations, or some may feel ready to speak up in new ways. Despite the pain we feel throughout this process, we realize that truth must come to light before changes can be made and healing can occur.
And one key point to realize: The shadow being revealed by Chiron and Eris is not new; it has been active but flying under the radar for too many years to count. What is new is our awareness of the problem. The masks are off.
