In earlier periods of human development, humanity functioned quite differently. Human beings were largely dependent upon the spiritual hierarchies, or angels, for inspiration and guidance. In this way, humanity was receptive rather than radiant, led by higher spiritual beings while possessing only a limited sense of personal identity and self-consciousness.

Following the Incarnation of Christ, often described in Anthroposophy as the Turning Point of Time, humanity began to turn inward and consciously individuate from the group. Here, self-consciousness and self-awareness emerge, allowing the individual to realize their unique identity rather than existing in a primarily unconscious and symbiotic relationship with their tribe and the hierarchies.

From this point onward, humanity is called not merely to receive spiritual life, but to generate it. We become radiant, capable of producing life from within ourselves through conscious spiritual development. Communion and interconnectedness no longer arise from unconscious dependence, but from free will and the profound realization that, although individuated, we remain spiritually united.
