Exposing Fake Voices in Politics and Spiritual Blogs
Written by Alex Rivera Views: 8149

In an era of online disinformation and political polarization, various actors employ tactics to pose as ideological opponents.
This includes individuals or groups creating free blogs and sharing content that appears to promote one set of ideas while advancing another agenda. This article explores general disinformation strategies and potential motivations, including their application to spiritual blogs with channeled messages, without attributing them to specific groups unless supported by evidence.
How Disinformation Actors Pretend to Be Ideological Opponents Online
Actors engaging in disinformation often set up anonymous blogs on free platforms like WordPress or Blogger. They curate and repost articles from various sources, framing them to amplify certain views while subtly twisting narratives to provoke reactions. For instance, tools like social media allow the building of personas that mimic specific language, all while hiding true identities and affiliations.1
Evidence from reports shows tactics used in broader disinformation efforts, such as infiltrating online spaces to disrupt or discredit movements. For example, Russian trolls have been documented exploiting political identities to infiltrate groups on both sides. Discussions on platforms highlight cases where individuals pose as supporters of one side to make it appear extreme.2
The Role of Disinformation in Political and Spiritual Debates
Disinformation often involves spreading narratives to influence public opinion. Reports indicate coordinated efforts to exacerbate divisions by posing as the opposition, a classic false flag tactic. Online activists discuss adopting opposing lingo to promote ideas that ultimately harm the targeted cause. This can extend to spiritual contexts, where blogs promote "channeled messages" blending New Age spirituality with political ideologies, such as right-wing ideals, potentially as a tactic to sow discord or discredit movements.34
Such tactics align with "conspirituality," where spiritual beliefs overlap with conspiracy theories, often leading to far-right narratives. While organic in many cases, the versatility of disinformation allows for cross-ideological use, including left-wing actors setting up spiritual blogs to amplify extreme views and turn opinion against them.56
Potential Motivations for Such Tactics
Motivations can include sowing discord, discrediting movements, and protecting certain policies. By amplifying extreme ideas, actors aim to turn public opinion against them. This aligns with strategies to counter opposing sentiments. Financial incentives, like ad revenue from sensational content, soliciting donations, or other funding mechanisms, and political activism are other drivers. In spiritual blogs, channeled messages add an aura of mysticism, making the disinformation more appealing to niche audiences.78 It's important to note that these tactics are used by various parties and should not be generalized to any specific group without evidence.
This highlights the blurred lines in online politics and spirituality, where deception manipulates narratives on sensitive issues.
