The key to self-mastery lies in learning to direct and hold your attention.
From the Latin ad tendere—“to stretch toward”—attention is the act of consciousness reaching out. When you attend to something, you project a ray of your own life-force toward it. There forms a line of magnetic force between you and the object of your attention. Literally. Along this luminous current, energy, quality, and vibration begin to flow back into your field. Whatever you focus upon is magnetically drawn into your experience. Energy follows thought.
Think of your attention as an inner laser: when diffused, its light is weak and scattered, but when focused, it becomes a beam of tremendous precision and power. The disciplined soul learns to hold that beam steady—undistracted, unwavering—and thus becomes the conscious director of energy. Wherever your inner laser rests, life responds.
Directing Your Attention Creates Manifestation
If your attention rests on lack, the vibration of lack responds and substance of that kind begins to flow into your affairs. But if you direct your beam toward abundance, strength, or love, then the divine currents of those qualities begin to move along the line of force you have created. When you turn your attention upon Ray 1—the Ray of Power and Will—tiny particles of fire from the Flame of that Ray start their journey toward you. When you turn it toward Ray 2—the Ray of Love and Wisdom—fiery particles of that flame flow into your heart and world. Through attention, you literally magnetize the very substance of the Rays into your life. Attention is magnetic invocation. It is how you call a vibration into embodiment.
Attention and Healing
To heal any condition, the first act must be to withdraw attention from the problem and fix it upon the Source of all perfection—the I AM Presence, the inner Sun of your being. As you cast the beam of your attention into the heart of that Presence, a current of Light, Substance, and Power begins to flow along the beam you have established. This stream of living energy descends into your body, your feelings, your world—saturating all with radiance. The light does the work.
This is the scientific meaning of the verse from the Book of Psalms:
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”
The “eyes” are the inner attention; the “hills” are the higher realms of consciousness. As you keep the beam unwavering, the descending current of Light dissolves discord as sunlight dissolves mist.
Your consciousness is the bridge between Spirit and form—the cause behind all manifestation. Your attention is the instrument through which consciousness selects, directs, and qualifies its creative power. When attention is turned outward, it feeds the problem. When turned upward, it releases the Light that heals, supplies, and perfects. Try it now: lift your inner gaze toward the radiant core above your head. Feel the golden current of your I AM Presence flowing down the line of your attention into your body and affairs. This is not imagination—it is scientific law in action. Your I AM Presence is your supply.
