You Suffer Only Your Thoughts

You Suffer Only Your Thoughts

The only thing that hurts you is your own thoughts and mind; never the external happening.

When you sleep at night you don’t suffer from what hurt you during the day. This is because your conscious mind is at rest and projecting other illusions in the dream state. In deep sleep where there is no dreaming, nothing exists at all. No suffering and no stories.

When you wake up in the morning, in those first few seconds, your mind has still not picked up its stories. But once you’re fully awake the mind takes up all the drama and stories and wears them again like a costume. The anger, problems, grudges, identities, and suffering are picked up again like clockwork. They are remembered and believed all over again.

Sometimes in the middle of the day, something may destruct you for a few minutes, maybe a joke, a TV show, a conversation, or a child playing, and you forget your problems in those brief moments. You forget to suffer.

Sometimes in the middle of the day, something may distract you for a few minutes, maybe a joke, a TV show, a conversation, or a child playing, and you forget your problems in those brief moments. YOU FORGET TO SUFFER. In those moments your thoughts are inactive.

Who is suffering?

So, the question is, if this suffering has moments of reprieve and is sometimes forgotten, who is suffering and why do you choose to suffer? It is because you are addicted to it. We like our suffering and we like our stories. If we didn’t, we would not choose to cling to them, because it is obvious that they are illusions, and we do momentarily release them in sleep, and in waking moments of pure joy when we are distracted.
