Overshadowed, But Not for Long

Overshadowed,
But Not for
Long

She is dark.

Better to see the

fire she tends

within her

depths.

It burns for

a love that has

no requirement

to extend its

soft arms.

Offer its

mass to orbit

a spinning world

struggling to turn,

keep its axis, reclaim

its quintessence.

All but lost on its

way through the

dense passage.

All but overcome

by its own shadowy

revolutions, its

ellipse an

imperfect

course

round.

A ram

meets

Poseidon

in his field

of blue ice

nearly 3 billion

cosmic miles off,

last engaged as

Darwin offered his

Origin of Species,

Marx his Das Kapital,

and the Geneva Conventions

had need to rise

in the sphere,

the scope

of man.

It was

thence

Lady Liberty

made her transatlantic

crossing to light the torch

for humankind's tired, poor,

huddled masses

yearning

to breathe

free.

Yearning.

To breathe.

To free.

{oh, to free—}

Thus, to arrive

to a new

land.

A new world

where

all

are

welcome

home.

So, too, in the shaft

of a dwarf star's blaze,

in the rekindle of its

long terrestrial

embrace, its

infusion with

truing north

of divine

destiny,

she opens

her heart—

even in its

overshadowing,

even with this

eclipsing:

holding

bloom

in the

warm

cradle

of her

bare

palm.

chalice

brimming

with

springs

and salts

and new

born

stars.

Here,

she whispers,

now.
