Last week, I held a Zoom gathering where I conducted a live coaching session with a courageous woman named Jen.

We talked about transitioning from working full-time to semi-retirement, the temptation to fill the calendar with new forms of busyness, and the need to reign in a thirsty ego on the lookout for a new project to swallow. Soon enough, the conversation ventured into deeper territory.

Who am I if I’m not accomplishing something every day? What do I tell people who ask what I’m up to? How do I sit still when an inner voice tells me I’m lazy and should be doing something helpful or productive with my life?

Fortunately, I’m intimately familiar with this voice (and situation) and understood precisely what Jen was up against. Anything we devote our time and energy to over a long period of time can easily become who we are, and when we let that go, the ego gets antsy and impatient. And, in a culture that celebrates going from zero to sixty at lightning speed, going from sixty to zero may seem like “running out of gas.” To the ego. That's until you understand that slowing down is a soul-driven superpower.
