Survive Heavy Times of Pain and Tears

Survive Heavy Times of Pain and Tears

I’ve been hearing from friends and clients that many of them are on the edge of tears, or feeling overwhelming sadness.

I remind them this is normal for anyone who has empathy for those who suffer. Today we explore how to maintain inner equilibrium navigating these very dark times.

Uncertainty Fills the Air

First, uncertainty fills the air. Senseless wars have slaughtered millions, destroyed entire regions, and millions suffer from famine, resulting from climate changes or wars in their regions. Families are being destroyed as people are thrown to the wind like cut grass in a tornado. There are mass migrations around the world for those trying to escape starvation and violence. The only people not feeling the pain and suffering of millions are those who don’t feel at all, or who have chosen to view suffering with indifference and egocentric attitudes.

Uncertainty breeds fear, as we are trained to fear the unknown. As different parts of the social order break down, the world is being plunged into chaos. While millions suffer from evil people having power over them, at the same time we always have the power to see things from the angle of our Soul. This is the one thing no dictator or psychopathic thug has power to take from us, and in fact, cultivating a Soul response is an antidote to feeling swamped by sadness.

Allow Yourself to Feel

There’s nothing wrong with crying when things feel overwhelmingly sad. Tears are a way to release deep feelings. Again, it’s better to feel badly than not to feel at all. And since we are creatures feeling all there is to feel from the moment we’re born, we will feel the atmosphere around us. Just as we live in a global field of oxygen, we also live in a global field of feelings, like an ocean we swim in our entire lives.

This ocean of feelings is what we call “Collective Consciousness,” or what Jung called “the Collective Unconscious.” It is all the unacknowledged “echoes of feelings past,” with billions contributing to those echoes across the centuries. We all swim in that collective field, and as we are feeling creatures, we will feel all kinds of things, especially those feelings which resonate with what we’ve learned to cultivate since childhood.

Life Purpose and Emotional Awareness

I believe the purpose of life is to become more aware of ourselves, our interactions, and our aspirations. We’re here to learn about the material world as we refine our emotional and mental reactions to what we encounter. However, the world is constantly changing, which means we’re forced to adapt to conditions we didn’t make. So though all of us wish we knew more, we respond the best we can, and along the way learn what’s right for us and what generates frustration.

This is where feeling that “I’m too sensitive” isn’t helpful as it’s a put down of our sensitivity. We WANT to be empathetic. We want to feel all there is to feel; we just need to be conscious in our responses so that each experience of empathy strengthens our connection to our Soul. Then even as we experience sadness, we make our heart stronger, and at some point figure out effective responses to the pain we feel. Then our tears become our strength as our Soul witnesses its response to outer events.

Transforming Sadness Into Love

As we learn to view pain and suffering from the angle of our Soul, our love grows stronger. This is part of the human growth potential, as Soul-ful Love is the antidote to fear. Where Love is, fear flees. Where Love is expressed, fear dissolves. There’s nothing wrong with being sensitive if it’s your gateway to your Soul.

When feeling deep feelings, remember you’re not the only one. Many are feeling the pain and suffering of others, and together we are the collective Soul of humanity witnessing the senseless evil that some are doing to others. For some, there is frustration at not being able to do anything to lessen the cause of the pain, while others are mobilized to do what they can. Some are supporting efforts to feed refugees; some support legal efforts to make sure people get due process; some are raising money and awareness of other causes, whether for animals, the environment, children, or anything which moves their heart and Soul.

Responding With Intention

However we choose to respond, as we act with intention, our fear and uncertainty disappear. As fear accomplishes nothing and is a useless and dangerous disease, it’s always best to face fear and banish it rather than indulge it. Overcoming fear is one of the greatest human tests as we express the Loving Wisdom of our Soul. Better to rejoice as we dissolve fear at every turn!

So as you navigate these sad times, remember you’re not alone, and your willingness to feel what is while generating a positive response however you can is the antidote to the collective suffering. Remember that sometimes what you’re feeling is nothing personal, and you’re just picking it up in the collective unconscious. When that happens to me, I just affirm that “sad thought form” is dissolving and will eventually pass away, or affirm that those who try not to feel will have empathy for the suffering they need to feel.

Adapting to Change and Finding Strength

Humanity is constantly changing focus and direction as the outer spiritual field energies change and new realizations come forth. Each of us has to move with the flow and find new views of personal effectiveness despite the changes. And we’ll feel the en
