Quantum Physics’ Correlation to Mysticism & The “Occult”

Quantum Physics’ Correlation to Mysticism & The “Occult”

Today I would like to write about a subject that in many ways fascinates me….Quantum Physics. Before I start this article, I would like to point out for sake of argument when reading this piece, that the word “Occult” simply means “hidden”.

It has no correlation to superficial or misleading connotations regarding anything malevolent. Now that I have made this clear, let’s start looking a bit more into how Quantum physics has changed the way we perceive the world, and how it has become the much needed link between “the mind” and “consciousness”.

By the end of the 19th century, most physicists believed they had discovered pretty much everything there was to be discover regarding Physics; except for a few loose ends. One of those lose ends, was the “problem” regarding the explaining of experimental data on caloric radiation; which did not fit the explanations of physics as it was at the time, or better said, the knowledge of physics they had at the time could not explain the experimental data. In order to try to solve this problem, German physicist Max Planck decided to find a proper solution.

The way it was seen back then, the electrons in heat radiation were supposed to give off energy continuously, but every time Max used the physics of the day to make predictions regarding that assumption, the predictions he got were absurd. After years of failure after failure, Max decided to look at the situation from another “Perspective”. He discovered that if he treated the electron’s energy emission not as a continuous wave, but as small amounts of energy or energy packets; or what he later called “quantum”, then the predictions could make sense and physics then would be able to explain experimental data–this is how Quantum Physics was born.

Quantum theory is the explanation of the behavior of atoms; Quantum mechanics is a name that encompasses both experimental observations in the quantum world and quantum theory–Quantum physics is the branch of physics that deals with explanatory models on the behavior of experiments within the quantum world.

To properly appreciate the impact Quantum Physics has had since its “discovery”, let’s us take a side note to remember what traditional Physics or physics based on Newton’s theories used to say. According to Newton’s physics, there is an objective reality dependent on us; a reality that can be described and studied and for which there are universal mechanical laws that govern it–this means the universe is like a great machine that works according to those universal laws which cannot be changed. According to this vision or theory, matter is solid and is made up of smaller parts that can be separated and studied separately, also our consciousness and mind are confined to our body and have no major impact on objective reality or what is outside of us.

However, when Quantum Physics studied the world of atoms, it arrived to very intriguing and amazing conclusions. First it made it clear atoms are not solid, as such they cannot be defined by time and space as previously determined by Newton’s physics. According to Quantum Physics, atoms have the unique nature or ability to be both a wave and/or a particle–they do not exist in themselves but in interaction with the system or environment and with the observer. In Quantum Physics, to determine the properties of an object to be observed; be it an atom or an electron; you need the observer and the type of measurement as well as the type of observation being chosen; this means according to the uniqueness of the experiment, the atom will either express itself as a particle, while in other experiments it will express itself as a wave. In other words, the properties of the object being observed, will depend on the type of experiment (observation) taking place, its measurements, which are all determined by the “observant”.

Before being observed, the observed objects are in a state of superposition, this means they can be a wave and a particle at the same time, and they can also be in two places at the same time. When the observation takes place and according to which type of measurements being used, this superposition disappears or collapses, and the object acquires a define characteristic/property–this means the process of observation and the observant “determine” the outcome. There is also the entanglement phenomenon; let’s keep in mind when dealing with Quantum Physics, when talking about objects, we are talking about atoms, electrons and a great diversity of other particles and waves.

According to entanglement theory, all objects are entangled in a very strong and meaningful interconnection which takes place at the precise moment they interact–this means one affects the other or at the very least influences the other–this means that when an entanglement is formed a system is formed and each system can be described as having properties as if it were whole. Since large objects are already interconnected with each other and its surroundings, its characteristics are already well defined. As such, Quantum physics theory can be used to affect the smallest particles; however, let us not forget that although atoms and electrons and other even smaller particles seem miniature, they are in a state of superposition, which means they will be affected by what the observer does–this means by affecting the smaller particles we can start affecting the bigger ones. In other words, Newton physics can be used to explain the solid reality of big objects while Quantum Physics explains the small yet vast world within that reality and more; better explained…traditional physics helps with an approximate description which overall help us understand our immediate world, but Quantum physics deal with the very fabric of it.

The philosophical implications of these data vary, but in general terms, it can be said that philosophically quantum physics tells us the universe is not a great machine made up of parts that are immovable, but that it is an intricate network of deep interconnections, and that these interconnections mean all the elements of the universe influence each other and can be modified by the observer. Based on this, we can deduct that time and space are not set, this also means the concept of being separate is more an illusion than a reality; interestingly enough this is what ancient teachings have been trying to tell us from the very beginning through the explanation of life’s duality or “maya”, and consciousness not being caged to mean the mind but everything inside and outside of us–which is alive and permeating of pure energy.

Through quantum physics philosophically we come to understand that opposites are more an illusion meant to separate; an illusion created by the mind of the observant. As such, good and bad, hot and cold, light and darkness are nothing but different sides of the same coin….they are all part of life and cannot be denied, suppress, nor escaped–this means, one should seek to integrate in order to better “see” the whole picture.

It is very important to keep in mind that mysticism as well as occultism have always talked about this interconnection, and have always said the mind is a tool but consciousness is not a state of mind but a state of being which cannot take place by simply observing but the observer experiencing (observant + study). This is why both mysticism and occultism have never agreed with dogma, nor the mundane desire to separate heart from mind or give either one a higher place; as they are both necessary when trying to understand what Plato called the True Reality. Both can serve man well, but these will need action (to experience life) in order to start awakening consciousness and integrating life’s duality. As such, the idea of one as a sinner or a saint is really a personal illusion, for we are both; when we accept this, as well as accepting the fact that we should not try to eradicate the mind or the heart, nor negate the body (which is a vessel), nor try to live in one extreme or the other (light darkness), it is when we start to open what mysticism calls our “third” eye or the eye of consciousness. Only then, can we start to understand life, ourselves and others; only then can we claim ourselves to be “spiritual”.

I hope this explains in some small way, why when we delude ourselves of being “good” and “focus only on the positive”, we end up behaving in rigid ways towards anyone who does not think the same as us; for just thinking it, or saying it out loud, does not make it so. In accepting perception, we open our mind not only to a whole new world inside of us, but outside as well. In the proper understanding of perception and primordial rules, we open our eyes, hearts and minds to others and situations which may be different–opening doesn’t mean we all become the same, but like quantum physics has shown us; we are made of the same, but our experiences make our individuality, and that is a reality which cannot be denied simply because in our ignorance we have come to hate “individuality”. In doing so, we close our minds and our hearts, leaving us blind to the world; yet we like to tell ourselves we are “awakened” or “illuminated”.

It is not in the destruction of the ego, or the punishment of the body, nor in the false idea that to have a good heart, means to lower your head to everyone and accept the whip of spiritual, mental and physical degradation, where we will find ourselves…but in the exaltation of our own divinity through consciousness–this once awakened, will not make us arrogant; on the contrary, we will be simply illuminated…healthy ego and healthy unison of mind, body and soul, which leads to the embracing of our true spirit.

Only a person who chooses not to work on his individual path to self, the one who chooses not to heal his wounds, fears the ego and confuses it with the masks or false ego–it is not the ego he fears but his own unhealed parts or what is commonly known as “darkness”. Only a person who seeks to ran away from self, fears looking in and accepts dogma or individuality and self responsibility.

In recognizing we are both, the light and the shadow, the sinner and the saint, the student and the guide, we start to integrate life’s extremes. None of us have all the answers, and your path will be an individual one; maybe yours is found in religion, others in science or others; it matters not as long as you don’t fall pray to the illusion…to dogma; for a dogmatic mind is a close mind and it can be found within every branch.

As long as your beliefs in practice make you a genuinely better human being; not based on programing or what others say, but serves your unique spirit, you will expand your consciousness–that is why life provided so many wonderful paths for our expansion. We are not cookie cut versions, we are the Philosopher Stone…we are the ultimate treasure. I don’t have to be like your nor you like me. I don’t have to find what is divine through the same means you do–that is life giving choice, and that is not only beautiful, it is wonderful!
