“Discover how forgiveness coexists with wise boundaries.” ~Crystal Wind

In spiritual and alternative spiritual communities, forgiveness is frequently presented as essential medicine for the soul.
The message is clear and repeated often: To find peace, you must forgive those who have hurt you. Holding onto anger or judgment only binds you to the pain and keeps your vibration low. By choosing forgiveness, you set yourself free, open your heart, and align with the love that is the true nature of reality.
This teaching carries real power. There is no doubt that chronic resentment acts like a slow poison. It keeps the wound alive long after the original event, affecting sleep, relationships, physical health, and the ability to trust life again.
Many people report profound shifts when they finally release the grip of "what they did to me." The energy that was tied up in replaying the story becomes available for creation and joy.
Yet beneath the surface of this widely accepted spiritual principle lies a more complex reality that many awakening souls are quietly grappling with. What happens when the person you forgive continues to repeat the same harmful patterns with others? What if your act of release removes any remaining internal pressure that might have led them to reflect or change?
Is it possible that in the name of your own peace, you have stepped back from a situation where your voice or your boundary could have protected someone else? These are not comfortable questions. They challenge the black-and-white version of forgiveness that gets shared in many circles. They ask us to hold a more nuanced, mature understanding — one that honors both the spiritual truth of release and the human responsibility of discernment.
What Forgiveness Is — and What It Is Not
At its heart, forgiveness is an act of self-liberation. It is the conscious choice to stop feeding the emotional and energetic connection to a painful event or person. It does not require forgetting what happened. It does not mean the behavior was acceptable.
And it most certainly does not obligate you to resume a relationship or restore trust that was broken. When spiritual teachings speak of forgiving "seventy times seven" or seeing the higher light in everyone, they are pointing to a higher perspective.
From the soul's viewpoint, every person is on their own journey of learning, often repeating patterns until the lesson is complete. The harmful action usually comes from a place of deep unconsciousness, unhealed trauma, or a distorted belief system. Recognizing this can soften the personal sting and help you stop taking the behavior as a reflection of your worth.
However, this higher seeing does not erase the impact in the physical world. A person can be a beloved soul at the deeper level and still be acting in ways that cause real damage to bodies, hearts, finances, and trust. Pretending otherwise in the name of spirituality is not enlightenment; it is a form of denial that often serves the ego's desire to avoid discomfort or conflict. True forgiveness leaves you free. It does not leave you naive.
The Cost of Premature or Performative Forgiveness
One of the shadows of the forgiveness mandate is how it can be used — sometimes by others, sometimes by our own spiritual ego — to bypass the necessary work of feeling, grieving, and setting limits. People are encouraged to "just forgive" before they have processed the betrayal, the loss of innocence, or the violation of trust.
The result is often a fragile peace that crumbles the next time the pattern shows up. In family systems especially, the pressure to forgive can function as a tool of control. The person who caused harm (or those who benefit from the status quo) may invoke spiritual language to guilt the wounded party into silence or reconciliation.
"If you were really spiritual, you'd forgive." This dynamic can keep entire family lines stuck in cycles of abuse, financial exploitation, emotional manipulation, and boundary violations for generations.
When we forgive without addressing the behavior, we often teach the person that there are no real consequences. They may move on to the next target with the same tactics, now perhaps more skilled at evading accountability because the previous person "let it go." This is not the peace that spiritual teachings point toward. It is a truce that benefits the one causing harm more than anyone else.
Boundaries: The Missing Piece in Many Spiritual Teachings
Healthy boundaries are not the opposite of love or forgiveness. They are the structure that allows love to remain sustainable and authentic. Without them, what we call love often becomes enabling, people-pleasing, or energetic martyrdom.
On the awakening path, many are learning that protecting your energy field is a sacred responsibility. This includes the right to limit or end contact with people whose presence consistently disrupts your peace or whose patterns you no longer consent to participate in.
You can do this from a place of deep forgiveness and compassion. In fact, clear boundaries are often easier to maintain when the charge of anger has been released. Cord cutting rituals, visualization of golden or diamond light surrounding you, and daily practices of reclaiming your energy are practical tools many find helpful.
These practices support the internal release while reinforcing the external limit. You are not cutting the person off in hatred; you are withdrawing the unconscious energetic agreement that allowed the old dynamic to continue. You can send light and prayers from a distance while keeping your door closed. The two are not in conflict.
Accountability and Protecting the Vulnerable
There is another layer. Sometimes the question is not just about your own peace but about whether stepping back leaves others exposed. In cases involving children, elders, financial abuse, or patterns that clearly harm the wider community, forgiveness and right action can and should coexist.
Speaking truth, documenting incidents, supporting other victims, or involving appropriate authorities is not a failure of forgiveness. It can be an expression of care for the whole.
The universe may handle ultimate justice through karma and soul evolution, but in the meantime, we are each responsible for what we allow to pass through our awareness without response. The key is the energy from which the action comes.
If you act from unresolved rage or a desire for revenge, you risk re-entangling yourself. If you act from a centered place of clarity — "This pattern ends here, and I will do what I can to limit its reach" — the action carries a different frequency and is less likely to create new entanglements for you. You cannot control another adult's choices. But you can refuse to participate in the fiction that the pattern is harmless or already resolved.
Putting It Together: A Conscious Approach
For those walking the path with eyes open, the invitation is to integrate rather than choose sides between "forgive everything" and "never forgive." Begin with honest self-inquiry. Have you truly released the emotional grip, or are you calling avoidance or suppression "forgiveness"?
Have you allowed yourself to feel the full range of grief, anger, and disappointment, or did you rush to the "spiritual" stage because it felt more enlightened? Then assess the current situation with clear discernment. Is there genuine change and accountability, or only words and temporary shifts?
What level of access and trust has actually been earned through consistent behavior over time? From that place, choose boundaries that protect your energy and align with your values. These boundaries can be firm without being cruel.
They can include sending distant blessings or prayers while maintaining physical and emotional distance. They can mean limited contact for practical reasons while keeping your heart guarded. If others are at ongoing risk and you have the capacity and standing to help without self-sacrifice, consider what right action looks like.
Sometimes it is private support for a victim. Sometimes it is public truth-telling. Sometimes it is simply refusing to participate in the family fiction that "everything is fine now." Finally, tend to your own field. Use whatever tools resonate — breathwork, time in nature, energy healing sessions, connection with your higher guidance, or simple daily intention — to stay clear and sovereign. The more rooted you become in your own light, the less power old patterns hold over you or through you.
If this resonates with something you are navigating, know that you are not alone and you are not failing at spirituality by honoring your discernment. True peace includes the courage to see clearly.
