A patterned response results from emotional reactions to stimuli that were charged with negative energy, to the extent they left a permanent imprint in the psyche. Think of those afterimages that once burned onto old computer and TV screens. 

Patterned responses get re-triggered when the reaction to new stimuli matches the vibration of the emotion that created the original imprint. This may seem a complex mechanism, but the reaction is lightning fast and expressed in the same way each time. 

Stubbing your toe, for instance, leads to the same angry response. Feeling disrespected by someone unleashes similar defense mechanisms. These patterns instigate intense internal assessments, false feelings of justified rage, and possibilities of physical altercation. 

False personality fuels these habitual behaviors. Once the ego identifies and becomes consumed by an emotion, a predictable pattern ensues. Patterned responses are then a learned behavior. 

You disrupt the patterns with internal work, but this requires ruthless self-honesty to acknowledge the pattern is real and getting triggered. Understanding the three parts of self-observation is helpful here. 

The Three Parts of Self-Observation

1. Plain-Seeing - This means to observe any reactions to events that occur in real-time without judgment or negative reaction. The goal is to witness the event “as-is.” Take a snapshot of the event in your mind, a mental photograph that sees the event free from interpretation or a need to read between the lines. 
2. Acknowledgement - The realization that aspects of the ego are being observed and recorded in memory. This important step helps avoid rationalizing or justifying the thoughts and feelings generated and distancing the self from identifying with the response or behavior. 
3. Understanding - With this part you see the reaction, you acknowledge what it is, and you understand the emotional basis that gave it a footing in your consciousness. This helps you trace or reveal the initial root cause behind the behavior. Through understanding comes a peaceful transition to a reestablishment of higher consciousness. 

It can be a challenge to recognize and acknowledge a patterned response when false personality resorts to justifying the behavior with a defense that the response is warranted. Over time, the behavior may become so entrenched in the emotional fabric of the personality that it devolves into an ego formation. More on that to come.
