I feel deeply blessed to be welcomed as a guest into the beautiful home of Rae Chandran, close to Mount Fuji, a place where even the silence seems to have something to say, although, like every good master, it rarely explains itself.

Rae has been channeling and sharing spiritual teachings for many years, offering writings, workshops, and teachings of the heart in many different forms, and spending time with him reminds me that wisdom can speak through thousands of words and still be pointing toward something that can only be understood when the words finally become quiet.

Today, together with Naomi, his former wife, we visited a beautiful water shrine, and as I walked through the place I could feel the presence of the Water Dragons, the consciousness of the water, and the ancient trees standing there with that peculiar dignity trees have, as if they know something extremely important about existence and find our human urgency slightly amusing.

I approached one of the trees, opened myself to its presence, and listened.

It whispered:

The Way Beyond the Senses Is Through Them

“The Buddhists teach you to withdraw your attention from the five senses, yet perhaps there is another doorway hidden inside the same teaching, because what if the way beyond the senses is to enter them so completely that the one who is seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching finally disappears?

Humans are often distracted by the senses because they experience them only halfway. You look without truly seeing, listen while preparing your answer, touch while longing for another touch, eat while thinking about tomorrow, and walk across the Earth while your attention is living somewhere else entirely.

Perhaps the problem was never that you felt too much. Perhaps you have never allowed yourself to feel enough.

What if you listened to the rain until there was no listener and only the intimate music of water touching Earth? What if you felt the wind upon your skin so completely that, for one timeless moment, you could no longer tell whether the wind was touching you or whether existence was feeling itself through your body? What if you touched another being with such presence that touch ceased to be an attempt to receive something and became the silent recognition that, for a moment, life was meeting itself through two forms?

You search for transcendence while existence is caressing your face with raindrops. You close your eyes to find the Divine while the Divine has been standing in front of you disguised as a tree. You travel thousands of kilometers searching for sacred places while walking every day upon a planet you have forgotten is sacred.

And perhaps the greatest joke is that humans spend years trying to escape the world in order to find God, while God keeps creating birds, strawberries, rivers, bodies, lovers, thunderstorms, flowers, and sunsets, apparently showing very little interest in escaping creation.

Enter the World More Deeply Than Ever Before

Your senses can become distractions when awareness is shallow, yet the same senses become gateways when awareness is complete. Enter the sound so deeply that you discover the silence inside it. Enter the body so completely that you discover what has no body. Love the world so fully that possession becomes impossible. Taste life so completely that craving disappears.

This is one of the great paradoxes of awakening: sometimes you transcend the world by entering it more deeply than ever before. Many teachings take you halfway across the bridge and then ask you to build a house there. Go further.

Be the Buddha who knows the silence, and also be Zorba who knows how to dance barefoot upon the Earth, because perhaps enlightenment is spacious enough to contain both the monastery bell and the laughter coming from the kitchen.

Enjoy this life with such awareness that pleasure becomes meditation, touch becomes prayer, listening becomes communion, and seeing becomes an act of love. Let yourself be touched by existence in ways you have never allowed before, and touch existence with the same tenderness, because when awareness is complete, the world ceases to be something you consume and becomes something you are in relationship with.

Then one bird can become scripture, one raindrop can contain the ocean, one tree can become a master, and one sound received with your entire being can become the gong of awakening.

Perhaps the senses were never standing between you and enlightenment. Perhaps you simply stopped at the doorway and mistook the entrance for the destination.”
