Any tension you feel is a willingness to beat up on yourself. We tell it to you this way so you can see that whenever it seems something outer is irritating or offensive or imposing upon what you call yourself, it is always an active willingness to attack your very own self.

Seeing this connection clearly and remaining aware of it, it becomes easier and easier to relax out of that old temptation toward self-attack–to see it for what it truly is, and to simply rest in quiet when it happens on the scene.

You would only beat up on yourself if you believe it serves some practical purpose. So anytime there is the merest hint of irritation or disturbance, here is an old, old value system exposed. An old, old value system exposed has the chance to get corrected. Here, in this moment of irritation is all the machinery laid bare–all the thoughts that tell you that by attacking yourself, you are keeping things under control, safe, and neatly ordered. When it seems you are analyzing and interpreting something other than yourself, it is the merest flip of a trick. It is the same self-attack in different packaging. It eventually becomes obvious to you and all that it is madness to attack your very own self, no matter what the packaging.

Pessimism is the weight of the false self. So when you feel that heaviness, it does not mean that something has gone wrong. It does not mean that anything is against you. It’s simply a sign of your attachment to what you never can be–a pretending that you are a character, when that can never be possible. It is fitting that your belief that you are a character should feel heavy and unbearable. When you can see clearly how bad it feels, you will not attempt anymore to squeeze any “juice” out of it. All the value is in the being you share with all, and it gets easier and easier to rest here. The contrast you feel now between resting in shared being and any attempt to extract happiness from a character can only be instructive.

Behind every false mind is the Mind filled with light. You have such a beautiful resting place available to you always, and from this place of rest, all things the character seems to need to do unfold naturally and easily. As you learn to rest and see that this is true, you also learn to trust. Stand back to allow help to spring forward into your experience.

You are safe in letting blocks go. It becomes more and more obvious that blocking love is never protective or helpful. Any feeling of tension is exactly how it feels to block love. Allow love to have its way, and you will see that love is wiser than any character could ever pretend to be.
