Safe Harboring

Safe Harboring

I was flooded

by the rising water

of a sudden—holiday stress

in the field, shifting dynamics

of the nervous system that is

our kind's, earthkind's,

her stars and planets

aligning just so.

As I recognized the rise of this tide

not my own, but made mine in response

—a part of that which cannot be parted—

I felt the basin of land under the water,

under the wash, under the swell;

I felt my feet

hold this,

my land.

This was my safe harbor

welcoming the flotsam and jetsam,

the sweep of currents and their riders,

the rips and waves, the weeds

torn from unsettled seas.

I was a safe harbor to all that swelled within

me in answer, in reception of the difficult and

irritable, the slight and slighting—even

maddening—for somewhere within

my great ocean, stillness

centered my bearing.

My depths.

My being.

What a thing to behold.

Like a comet, the breach

of a whale, the soar

of a nightjar;

curls of birch

making a magical

friend in the

deep winter

wood;

the glimpse

of heaven in

a child's

eyes.

A bite left

in the cookie

Father Christmas

has enjoyed.

Tis the season to give

the gifts of harbor, refuge,

ports in sundry storms,

life in the stories—

what you get?

A peace passing

all understanding

and on earth,

goodwill to

her kind.
