THE MARS EFFECT: As we journey through the rest of 2024, the planet Mars will be a major player in our shared experience, due to making hard aspects to each of the five outer planets.

As each of these aspects becomes exact, we can expect to see an increase in tensions, perhaps accompanied by fireworks.

Here are the dates to watch: the Red Planet squares Pluto on June 11, conjoins Uranus on July 15, conjoins Jupiter and squares Saturn on August 14-15, squares Neptune on September 2, and then opposes Pluto on November 3. (The Mars-Pluto opposition then repeats twice in 2025, on January 2 and April 26.)

MARS-PLUTO SQUARE: This week, with Mars in traditional Taurus square Pluto in progressive Aquarius, a conflict arises between what is comfortable and familiar versus that which is new and unknown. This may express as stubborn resistance to changes that may be uncomfortable but also necessary if we truly want to move forward in life. 

Pluto always initiates a process of transformation, but wilful Mars is likely to dig in its heels. Both Aquarius and Taurus are fixed signs, indicating a certain lack of flexibility. The result may be confrontations and power struggles, either internally or externally.

One positive way to work with this influence is to put steady effort into a project that will ultimately change our lives in some positive way, even if it causes discomfort in the short term. A good example of this is to sort through our clothing or other possessions — especially those that we are "attached to" for one reason or another — and to give away those items that are truly part of our past and do not represent our future. 

If, however, someone tells us to do this task, rather than it manifesting as our own desire, we are likely to resist their input and to grasp onto our attachments all the more tightly. A power struggle can then ensue, as each person in this scenario tries to control the situation and enforce their perspective and desires.

CERES, EARTH MOTHER GODDESS: The dwarf planet Ceres is in the spotlight this week, being in aspect to Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury on Wednesday. Matters related to home and family gain importance with these aspects, as well as our relationship with food and with our planet Earth.

We have the opportunity, with Saturn's easy aspect to Ceres, to be both responsible and caring in equal measure, and we might find family relationships to be quite supportive in return. However, with generous Jupiter in hard aspect to Ceres, we will need to be careful with overdoing, since loved ones could feel that we are being patronizing or overly solicitous. Another hazard, with the hard Mercury-Ceres aspect, is that we could default to an old pattern of assuming that those who are close to us should know our needs and wants without our having to verbally express them.

THIS WEEK'S ASPECTS: Here are my brief interpretations of this week's most important planetary aspects, day by day: 

Monday

Mercury semisquare Mars: We could be reactive today, more easily irritated, less patient, and also overly blunt. This aspect activates the energies of tomorrow's Mars-Pluto square and engages our minds in battle mode. 

Tuesday

Mars square Pluto, Mercury sesquiquadrate Pluto: The mind is suspicious, tending to see shadows before it realizes that there is also light. The urge to control a situation is strong, perhaps resulting in extreme efforts to gain power.

Wednesday

Saturn sextile Ceres, Jupiter sesquiquadrate Ceres, Mercury quincunx Ceres, Mercury square Saturn: While we can strengthen our bonds with those, we call family now, there are also some pitfalls to watch out for. If we try to promote our beliefs or morals without being open to hearing others' opinions, we will find the doors closing on our efforts to communicate. We will also want to question any assumptions we might make about another's thinking, or their emotional state.

Sun sextile Chiron: Remaining openminded, flexible, and willing to listen opens the door to mutual sharing and allows for healing to occur.

Thursday

Mercury sextile Chiron: This aspect improves our ability to find solutions to problems, as we trust our ideas but no longer need to defend them.

Friday

Sun conjunct Mercury, Mercury sextile Eris: These aspects are good for brainstorming sessions. We may be more direct than usual in expressing our opinions.

Mars semisquare Saturn: We run into obstacles if we try to resolve problems by traditional methods. Patience is key with any delays or frustrations. 

Saturday

Sun sextile Eris: This aspect supports open discussions and helps us be open to new creative ideas.

Sunday

Venus square Neptune: There can be disappointments or disillusionment if we have been wearing rose-coloured glasses when dealing with relationships or with financial investments.

Venus enters Cancer: Venus will be in sensitive Cancer from June 16 to July 11. During these four weeks, we tend to be security-conscious in both relationship and financial matters. We may feel more protective of loved ones and could play the role of nurturer or therapist. The challenge with impressionable Cancer is always to know our auric boundaries, to be aware of times when we have taken on another person's problems or absorbed their emotional state. 

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: Personal relationships and communication methods are central themes for you this year. You are learning to use equal measures of intuition and reason in these areas. Along the way, there are some lessons in how to express your insights in a way that others can easily receive. You are learning to speak with patience and to be especially sensitive to how your words are affecting the other person. As you gain these skills, it opens the door for you to feel more confident in sharing your perceptions.
