Libra - Full Moon Meditation
«I choose the way which leads between the two great lines of force.»
Introduction
This full moon meditation series draws from an astrological reading of the twelve labors of Hercules in Greek mythology.
The twelve trials of Hercules serve as symbolic teachings for humanity, guiding us from self-centeredness back to the Divine Heart. As mortals, we may not fully grasp the route to higher realms, yet the path itself directs us, often through intense experiences, toward our destiny. Thus, we journey "on the path until we embody it," traversing from Aries through Leo, Virgo, and Libra—progressing across all astrological signs to Pisces.
In Libra, harmony establishes the prevailing tone. Libra’s essence lies in balancing opposing forces and cultivating clear discernment.
Abstract
In Libra, the seventh sign of the astrological cycle, Hercules is summoned once more:
“Go out, my son, and seize the wild boar; redeem a ruined land, but pause to nourish yourself!”
Recalling his prior task, Hercules tells Apollo before departing: “I’ll leave your new bow behind, lest I kill again. In my last labor, by the vast sea’s edge, I struck and slew. This time, I’ll not destroy. The bow stays here.”
Thus, he sets off to find the boar, which spreads dread and chaos far and wide. En route to the peaks, Hercules encounters Pholos, and they quickly bond. When Pholos offers to share a cask of wine belonging to a band of Centaurs, Cherion joins them. Other Centaurs, hearing the revelry, recall the rule that the cask should only open when all are present. Yet Hercules and Pholos break it open without their kin. Furious, the Centaurs attack despite Hercules’ noble intentions, and in the clash, he accidentally kills Pholos and Cherion before fleeing to the mountains.
Once more, Hercules falters and resumes tracking the fierce boar through icy mountain heights. Unable to approach it, he lays a trap. After hours of waiting, the boar emerges at dawn, hungry, and stumbles into the snare. Hercules binds its hind legs, rolling the subdued beast like a cart down to the valley. Wherever they pass, onlookers cheer and laugh at the stumbling boar and the joyful, dancing Hercules.
Back with his teacher, Hercules is urged to reflect on past lessons. “Twice you’ve slain those you should cherish. Seek the reason why.”
Explanation
Rather than resting, Hercules joins Pholos and Cherion in revelry. Cherion represents noble thoughts, Pholos embodies raw strength. The tale reveals Hercules destroying his allies instead of taming his primal instincts. Pursuing the boar—symbolizing desire—into the lofty mountains sparks an awakening.
Libra presents paradoxes and extremes, demanding balance between opposing poles. Everyday struggles in this sign often revolve around sex and money. Hercules faces a dual challenge: valuing rare kinship with Pholos and bravely confronting the savage boar. This test of equilibrium often emerges through profound visionary insights and awareness of humanity’s plight below. Elevated ideals can disconnect us from life’s mundane aspects, dimming inner clarity with external action. Here, the path requires grasping that compassion bridges high and low, good and evil, great and small.
Libra’s keynote highlights navigating between negative and positive forces—walking the “razor’s edge” to achieve sound judgment. Uniquely, Libra lacks a human or animal emblem, sometimes depicted as a blindfolded figure of justice with scales. Does this suggest that ignoring outside views sharpens our ability to judge justly?
