An Astrological Overview of June 2021

An Astrological Overview of June 2021

As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.

The Overview for June

This year the month of June begins with a Mercury retrograde review of all things Gemini! This retrograde will find us “pruning and shaping” our expression, getting a new look and new understanding of the last half of Gemini and our response to that part of our chart as prelude to a transformation of “life into mind” after Mercury goes direct in late June. It will definitely give us a different pace and understanding of all things Gemini and Virgo in our charts. Because Mercury is in its home sign of Gemini, it’s the “Final Dispositor” for all Gemini transits this month, which means it joins Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune as one of the main behind-the-scenes players in the expression of the other planetary energies.

Mercury, “the Guide of Souls,” when retrograde, indicates a great time for taking a new look at recent developments, with an eye to a different perspective which can round out our view and opinion of any given thing. I explain a lot about the retrograde process and how we can best navigate these times in my book A New Look at Mercury Retrograde.(If you plan to get a copy, make sure it’s the newer 2014 second edition and not the 1997 first edition, since the second edition is a far better work!)

As I offered last month, Saturn has also just begun its retrograde period on a degree which offers us techniques of direct accomplishment and the ability to accelerate the evolutionary potential once we have a vision, a plan, and a good time to execute the procedure. As Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, those parts of our chart are also slowing so we can reflect on past Saturn lessons (however we experienced them) and the ability to see our understanding from a different perspective based in a wider view of the whole of things.

May brought us the first of three radical transformation periods this year, where our willingness “to graduate into a new realm of Being” in May 2020 now holds the promise of great opportunities, vision, and understanding! The second transit of Jupiter through “the Transfiguration Zone” at the end of Aquarius will happen in August, so consider June as a threshold moment where we begin to experience Jupiter’s rulership of Pisces as a dress rehearsal for our 2022 adventure in endings and beginnings. (And yes, if you’re feeling a lot more these days, it’s entirely due to Jupiter in Pisces opening you to the collective atmosphere with all its archetypes and ghosts!)

Planets Slowing Down and Shifting Signs

At the beginning of the month, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto are all retrograde, showing we’re getting a new look at the themes already shown to us in April and May. Jupiter will go retrograde in mid-month just before Mercury goes direct, with Neptune going retrograde shortly after that! All retrogrades represent a review, or a time when we get a different angle of understanding what that planet brought us when direct.

An analogy for the direct to retrograde to direct process would be that the first direct movement through the Shadow Zone (the span of degrees between where a planet goes stationary retrograde and where it goes stationary direct) is when we “toss the stone into the pond.” The retrograde period is when the ripples, having hit the far edge of the pond, return to center. The third transit of the Shadow Zone happens after the retrograde, and indicates a time when we can be clear about how to use that planetary function effectively within the conditions we’re in. So right now we’re getting the “karmic returns” of Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto, having experienced the “entrance to the far side” in April and May.

As Venus moves from late Gemini to early Leo and Mars shifts gears from Cancer to Leo, it indicates that the planets and houses where we have Aries, Taurus, Libra, and Scorpio will experience a distinctive change in those areas this month. Venus will give us three sign experiences, while Mars will notably move out of sensitive Cancer and into dynamic Leo. By the end of the month when both are in Leo, we’ll begin to feel the approach of their conjunction at 20 Leo in mid-July.

Mars

Mars is moving very fast at this time, and transits through the last 6 degrees of Cancer and the first 12 degrees of Leo this month. Because the Moon rules Cancer, Mars is ruled by the Moon during the first 11 days of the month, and the Sun for the rest of the month. As I offered in the May newsletter, while Mars is in Cancer, the sign and speed of the Moon play a large part in how Mars expresses itself, particularly in terms of the sign quality and how fast or slow the Martian response may be. Because the Moon is rapidly slowing the first week of June, the “behind-the-scenes” influence of the Moon on Mars indicates a slow Martian response.

While Mars can be hesitant and tentative in Cancer, once it enters Leo on June 11th, it’s flame on! Because Mars’ nature is both Fiery and Watery (through its rulership of Aries and Scorpio), even though it’s considered “debilitated” in Cancer, once it moves into Leo and its Fiery side is accented, we can expect the show to commence on June 11th

The first 10 days of the month, Mars makes a quintile to Uranus, a biquintile to Jupiter, and then an opposition to Pluto before leaving Cancer. Once Mars enters Leo, we see a novile, semisquare, and septile from Mercury, a quincunx and triseptile to Jupiter, with the end of the month bringing an anticipatory T-square from Mars in Leo to the powerful Saturn square Uranus which is exact all month.

As this will throw a dynamic integrative void into 13-14 Scorpio, we may have to eliminate or regenerate something in that part of our chart, seeing the whole thing as an experiment which nears completion in an improvised lab. Outwit whoever or whatever needs outwitting, and initiate or maintain lines of communication, even with those it’s tough to talk to.

As I gave you last month, when Mars is within a degree forming or separating from making an aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force, with an eye to moderating or antidoting impulsiveness and impatience. A Mars square is a clear signal to slow down, and if necessary, either turn a corner and/or put the brakes on something.

Sign Focus

The first 11 days of June is heavily Gemini and Cancer, due to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars occupying those signs. Because the Sun and Mercury are both in Gemini through June 20, Gemini is very strong; because Venus joins Mars in Cancer between June 2 and June 11, Cancer is also very strong at that time. Gemini has been a constant presence since May 8, and will continue until Mercury leaves that sign on July 11. So this year we have over two months of Gemini influence, with Mercury giving us all kinds of different information about that sign.

As Mercury in its home sign of Gemini squares Neptune in its home sign of Pisces all month, there is a need to be clear about what role(s) we’re playing or not playing. Examine the phases and stages of what has evolved up to this point, since they can show us what’s coming in July.

Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac. It is the natural step where we take what we’ve learned about approaching life spontaneously on our own terms (Aries), and having embraced that which is new and enjoyable (Taurus), turn it into a process of discovering new information, new understanding, new points of view, and new interactions. Gemini is where we assemble, compare, and contrast as much knowledge as we can en route to the shifts in allegiance in Cancer which help us consolidate our base of operations.

So wherever we have Gemini and Cancer will be the primary focus for the first 11 days of June, with Leo added to the mix after that when Mars enters that sign. On the Solstice, the Gemini influence recedes and Cancer is very strong until Venus enters Leo on June 26, joining Mars in that sign. At that point, even though Mercury in Gemini is still a definite and distinct influence, Cancer and Leo will be the focus of activity in our charts.

The Aquarius-Taurus Tension This Year

In January and February, Jupiter transited the first half of Aquarius, heralding what will be crystallized by Saturn throughout 2021. What Jupiter opens, Saturn will structure as it rumbles through the first half of Aquarius this entire year. Jupiter’s transit of 17-24 Aquarius in March opened what Saturn will secure in 2022, and Jupiter’s transit of 25-29 Aquarius in April opened what Saturn will secure initially between May and July 2022, and fully crystallize in January, February, and early March 2023.

Because Saturn is now retrograde as Uranus continues to move forward, the square between Saturn and Uranus is back in play as it will be very close all month. We’ll see manifestations of this off and on each time the Moon transits the middle of the Fixed signs, with particularly intense periods happening in early July and early August.

In the first 8 days of July, Mars and then Venus transit Leo and create T-squares with Saturn and Uranus, with major friction promised by the Moon in Taurus on July 4 squaring Saturn, conjuncting Uranus, and squaring Mars! While Venus completes her square to Uranus on July 8, the Moon’s transit of mid-Leo on July 11-12 will reprise the T-square, this time with the accent on Leo rather than Taurus.

In early August, these T-squares are replicated when Mercury and the Sun transit Leo, opposing Saturn and squaring Uranus. We’ll get a preview on July 31 when Moon in Taurus squares both Sun and Saturn before conjuncting Uranus, and an echo when Moon in Leo opposes Saturn on August 7 and squares Uranus just before the New Moon on August 8. All of these open an integrative void in mid-Scorpio.

Obviously this puts pressure on planets or points we have near between 11 and 15 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, as well as the last 5 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. The Fixed sign squares represent turning points and braking actions necessary for us to get our wisdom aligned with our understanding so we can “break on through to the other side.” These points of tension occur off and on the entire year as Saturn “makes real” all which Jupiter promised by its transit the last half of January and first half of February.

As I’ve offered in past months, the exact squares between Saturn and Uranus in January and February took a new bow on the stage of Life in late April and early May, when Taurus transits were conjunct Uranus and square Saturn, showing a turning point in whatever was set into motion early this year. This month the square is exact again showing the need to stay focused on what’s really pertinent while disregarding older or unimportant interference. As Saturn will be square Uranus all year, this friction will last through February 2022!

The first activation occurred in February from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus; the second occurs in June with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus; and the third happens just after the December Solstice with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus. Remember these waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle of these power planets which was set into motion when Saturn conjuncted Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so it would seem that this year activates conflicts dating back 20 years.

We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set

2020 was momentous because it began a new 20 year Aquarian Era, launched as a long term wave form at the Grand Mutation last December. That Jupiter conjunction with Saturn also set a new 200 year Era into motion, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. That implies we’re moving out of the materialism of the past 200 years, and have entered two centuries of the qualities of Air, with the associated qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.

The 2020 Summer Solstice Solar Eclipse is still facilitating a grand reorientation in our lives, accepting new allegiances and life directions, and the December 2020 Solar Eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we’ve been through in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, and as all Eclipses are “cosmic recyclers” removing that which we no longer need in our lives, take note of where you have 1 Cancer and 24 Sagittarius, since we’re aligning ourselves with a larger reality in the first, and finding happiness in the second.

The end of May featured a Total Lunar Eclipse at 6 Sagittarius/Gemini affecting us all for 5 months, and mid-June brings us another Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini, shutting down parts of our lives in that sector for 5 years to come. These eclipses are removing old ideas, old perspectives, old truths, and old futures, creating voids for new manifestations of these to come forth at the right time in our lives.

The Full Moon on May 26 at 6 Gemini/Sagittarius was also known as “the Christ fest,” or “the World Teacher Festival,” where the “Eternal Buddha Wisdom” of the previous Full Moon of Taurus/Scorpio will begin to be distributed to the world as a new World Teaching so that humanity may grow in compassion in 2021. This will bring a time of “looking for knowledge which ensures wealth and/or power” expressed through our ability to demonstrate skill, cooperation, and fairness as we “play the game of life.”

As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.

The Grand Irrationality

In June Uranus continues to biseptile Pluto, anchoring a 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality. This represents the very hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while, and it’s activated every time a planet or the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration.

It’ll be triggered again multiple times in June, so prepare for more irrationality in the air after our breather in May, such as it was. This month will be most intense at the beginning of the month when Venus triseptiles Pluto, septiles Uranus, and biseptiles Neptune, as well as the period right after the Summer Solstice, when the Sun will make identical aspects to the outer spiritual invisible Triad. After that, mid-July is highly active with Mercury in the Cancer zone and both Venus and Mars in the Leo zone, promising that period will be a major point of choice and change in the world’s destiny.

All the septile-series aspects trigger crucial choices and changes at “forks in the road of destiny.” I have written extensively about “The Grand Irrationality” which has been active for many years at this site and why all of humanity is forging its future destiny at this time. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In June these zones are around 25-29 Capricorn, 17-21 Pisces, 9-13 Taurus, 30 Gemini-4 Cancer, 21-25 Leo, 12-16 Libra, and 4-8 Sagittarius.

If things seem irrational and don’t make much sense, there’s always a septile-series aspect in the mix. During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get a little weird or crazy, just go slow and be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; all we must do is be clear about what we’re doing and why while being balanced, moderate, and caring along the way. Even though it is difficult to reason with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways, as these are points of choice and change where we determine our future destiny.

Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month

The month begins with Sun sesquisquare Pluto, trine Saturn, and biseptile Jupiter, with Mercury binovile Uranus and square Neptune and Venus trine Jupiter. This is a bit agitated, but also stabilizing due to the trines, with high specialization indicated by Mars biquintile Jupiter and Venus sextile Uranus.

Just after the New Moon, we have the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun, showing that whatever the Sun illuminates in the first week of June will be a primary Mercury focus through the end of the month. As the Lunation and conjunction are tredecile Jupiter, there’s great good fortune in the air for those who can figure out where they fit in or what contribution they can make in unique situations.

As all the inner planet transits make waxing aspects to Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter this month, it shows multiple phases of emergent activity wherever we have late Capricorn through early Taurus anchoring the spiritual energies in our charts. Mars makes its opposition to Pluto in the first week of June, indicating that while it’s still in a waxing phase to Jupiter through Neptune, it now begins making waning aspects to Pluto.

Mercury and the Sun square Neptune the first half of the month indicates the need for clarity about what role we’re playing in the larger atmosphere, and the voids in Sagittarius and Virgo indicate the need for precision and vision, order and imagination, without nitpicking, getting scattered, or believing all we’re told or even what we perceive. As the square continues the second half of the month into the first half of July, this is a long term re-evaluation related to whatever is happening in our Gemini sector relative to whatever began in our Pisces sector in March.

Because this square involves the sign of communications with the sign of confusion, try not to get frustrated if there’s a lack of clarity in discussions, and strive for precision even if someone is being obtuse. Note when there is exaggeration, deflection, wishful thinking, and/or an unrealistic expectation, and show good humor and humility in following through on details.

The second week of the month is extraordinarily active! Besides the New Moon Annular Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini, we also have the Inferior conjunction at 21 Gemini, with both these events influencing us for many months and years to come! The second week of the month also shows Mars changing signs as Venus sextiles Uranus and quincunxes Saturn just as these two heavyweights make their exact square! As I mentioned in the section on Mars, whenever an aspect is within 2 degrees forming or separating it’s extremely powerful, and Saturn is never more than a degree and a half from the exact square all month. As the voids are in Leo and Scorpio, show heart, courage, creativity, and focus as you eliminate the lesser and embrace the greater.

The New Moon Solar Eclipse at 20 Gemini on June 10 shows we’re entering a time of sharing and comparing information so our knowledge and understanding can be well-rounded. Of course, since Eclipses take things away which are no longer “true” for us, we enter a Summer season of many things Gemini and Sagittarius leaving our lives. As the New Moon Inferior Conjunction Eclipse is square Neptune, we can expect both confusion and the busting of lies and deceptions after that, with the energies lasting through 2026!

Besides the square to Neptune, the Solar Eclipse also makes a novile to Mars, a tredecile to Jupiter, a novile to Uranus, and a biquintile to Pluto. Coupled with Venus on the Star Sirius, the “Sun of our Sun,” making a tredecile with Neptune, it seems we’re going to have an intensely spiritually active New Moon period lasting the usual 4 weeks, with residual Eclipse effects for the next 5 years, characterized by serendipity, unexpected interactive gifts and circumstance, and huge returns for our spiritual efforts before now.

The above aspects assist the Sun in Gemini to release its beneficial spiritual energy through Neptune, with the Venus/Neptune extraordinary interactive blessings released through the Sun. What Venus builds with Neptune can be demonstrated via the Sun, and what the Sun builds with Jupiter can be released through Neptune. Areas most affected by this specializing beneficent energy are 1-5 Pisces/Virgo, 7-11 Aries/Libra, 13-17 Taurus/Scorpio, 19-23 Gemini/Sagittarius, and 25-29 Capricorn/Cancer. If you have a planet or point in one of the 10 zones, expect uniquely favorable gifts and blessings to come your way!

Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month

As noted, the second half of the month has a different energy than the first half, even if the New Moon’s influence will extend through the last half of June into the first half of July. Mid-month kicks off with Mars entering Leo, bringing the return of Fire after many weeks of none. Mars immediately makes a quincunx with Jupiter, creating a need to adjust within the context of “expansion through sacrifice,” even if the sacrifice involves letting go, “letting God,” demonstrating creative compassion, or just forgiving “the undead past” in order to generate productivity in our quest for new experiences, as well as accepting that it’s the dawning of a new day “revealing a world utterly transformed.”

The third week of June also shows the Sun quincunx Pluto, indicating that any longing for a new experience we may feel relates to the work to be done in the future, with style, pomp, and grand flourishes. It’s really more about anticipating style than demonstrating substance. This quincunx requires a degree of adjustment and sacrifice as we see the dawning of a new life chapter during a period of learning to focus our intensity so we may attract what we need.

Jupiter goes stationary retrograde at the end of the third week, promising sea changes for the entire world! Any time an outer planet hits one of its two stations, major observable changes happen in the world. This represents a threshold where we begin to catch glimpses of our “indestructible elements of Being.”

During the third week of June, we see the Moon increasing in speed and hitting its perigee, or its fastest speed around the Earth. It then begins to slow toward the end of the month, so don’t be surprised if things accelerate in the week before Mercury goes direct, and then begin to feel like they’re slowing in the 10 days after Mercury begins to move forward.

The last 10 days of the month bring Jupiter on its station, the Summer Solstice, Venus trine Neptune, Mercury stationary direct, Sun trine Jupiter, Venus opposed Pluto, Neptune stationary retrograde, Venus entering Leo, Venus quincunx and then triseptile Jupiter, and the month ends with Mars opposed Saturn. Venus trine Neptune and opposed Pluto creates a special evolutionary configuration with a powerful and productive void created around 23-28 Virgo, and should bring harmony, understanding, awareness, and stability to any planets we have in the last decan of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.

Evolutionary Development

This is the fourteenth month of the North Node in Gemini era, showing that our line of greatest evolutionary development is through seeing the many ways to learn and communicate a given thing, especially with an eye to assimilating diverse ideas from diverse sources. Themes this month focus on “newly opened lands offer the pioneer virgin fields of experience.” The line of greatest growth is to open to new realms of discovery, especially in terms of our individuality and spiritual attitudes, and to approach all experience with an open mind to the possibilities.

Because we are in the thick of learning the lessons associated with Saturn in Aquarius, remember to keep showing patience as you lighten and brighten your life in the area of your chart where you have Aquarius. As I’ve mentioned in past newsletters, this year we’re being tested to use the non-stop friction of the Taurus/Aquarius square to launch new visions, new models, new interactions, and new teamwork. We now head into the middle of the year, with Gemini, Cancer, and Leo energies making all kinds of aspects to the outer spiritual planets. We’re headed into a Summer of adaptation, adjustment, and getting clear as a prelude to a huge burst of creative energy after the Solstice.

Because of transiting Jupiter and Saturn, we’ve begun to catch glimpses of how to shortcut certain processes, whether our own evolution or to accelerate some work we’re doing. Jupiter just threw the doors open to new spiritual realms, and during its preliminary stay in Pisces we can experience a deeper and vaster connection with self, others, and life beyond anything we’ve experienced in the past decade. Keep open to ways you can make a greater contribution to your society or the world while understanding 2022 will bring us radical new experiences which will be very different than 2021 in many ways.

We’re definitely in a new era, with productive openings and realignments happening. Use the tension of the squares from Aquarius to Taurus to honor your strength, courage, determination, focus, and ability to attract your heart’s desire by being clear about what you want and what you don’t. As Leo and Scorpio continue to be the solutions to any problems generated by the squares, show heart, take heart, trust the heart, strengthen the heart, and radiate the Love you ARE to your world. BE the power of your inner Spiritual Warrior who never fears and cannot be defeated.

While Gemini is about discovering new information and perspectives, Cancer is about securing what nourishes our outreach in the world, and Leo is about finding what we can put our hearts into, remember we’re still in the opening phase of all which was set into motion at the Aquarian conjunctions. The group work continues to expand, so please keep in mind that we're all more aware, capable, and stronger together than we are separately.

Use the Sun in Gemini to see the Light of discovering the joys of a lifelong adventure in learning how to find and share information, be open to different understanding and perspectives, and keep in mind how you’ve already “graduated into a new realm of Being,” a unique spark of Light within infinite fields of Light. Mercury retrograde will help us all take a new look at recent events with an eye to pruning some things back in ways which can show our world what we value and why.

As we’ve launched into a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned, so have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the new perspectives of Gemini, the reorientation of Cancer, and the burst of heart power in Leo.
