Finalizing Our Understanding of What’s Important and Letting Go Of Distractions.

We are in the heart of the final Saturn square Uranus which won't be repeated for many years to come. This square is teaching us what’s pertinent and what isn’t as we deal with fixed frictional energies challenging us to be flexible in the midst of stubborn conditions, and stabilizing in the midst of agitated energies.

I first wrote about this square in June 2021 at the beginning of that triple event last year. Yes, Saturn squared Uranus three times in 2021, setting up this closing dynamic as they prepare to move into years of favorable aspects. Some of what you read here was offered then, while other parts have been updated to reflect current conditions.

Because a square is most powerful within a degree and a half both forming and separating, that three degree window in this slow moving square indicates many weeks of tension, with this last blast from the past finishing by early November. So we’re definitely in the heart of the final scene in the final act of the dance of spiritual friction indicated by Saturn and Uranus!

Interestingly, last year when we were in the heart of the second square, Mercury was also retrograde! So the current square also with Mercury retrograde is giving us a look back as well as signs and signals of what’s to come! And to give a nod to a friend of the site, I want to thank Sandra Walker for her insights about last year’s squares. She pointed out a few things which intrigued me, like Mercury retrograde in the first two but direct in the third, with the retrograde suggesting more introspection. And that the first square rules the period until the second square, and the second square rules the next period until the third square.

The first square occurred in February 2021 from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus with both direct in motion; the second occurred in June 2021 with Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus direct at 14 Taurus; and the third happened just after the December Solstice with Saturn direct at 12 Aquarius and Uranus retrograde at 12 Taurus.

By February 2022, Saturn was binovile Uranus, staying in that aspect until June 2022, when Saturn began to retrograde back to this square. The square was in orb by mid-July, with the exact square activated in late August and lasting until early November, with the exact square happening at 19 Aquarius to 19 Taurus.

Remember these waning (upper) squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus mark the culmination of the cycle of these power planets which was set into motion when Saturn conjuncted Uranus in 1988. Interestingly, in 1999-2000 Saturn in Taurus made its waxing (lower) square to Uranus in Aquarius, so it would seem that this year activates conflicts dating back 20 years.

The Venus Factor

An important factor in how these squares have manifested and are manifesting can be seen in Venus. While Saturn in Aquarius has been in its home sign at each square, Uranus is ruled by Venus, which has been in a different sign during each square. At the February square, Venus was in Aquarius in the weeks before the square and for a week after, when it entered Pisces. So its influence in the first Uranus square was primarily Aquarian.

The heart of the second square began at Saturn’s retrograde station in late May 2021, lasting from June 14 through July 3. Venus began the second square “hot zone” in late Gemini, was in Cancer for the exact square, and moved into early Leo just before the square passed in early July. So its influence in the second Uranus square was primarily Cancerian.

The third square happened December 23/24, with the heart of that square beginning December 12 and lasting until January 7, 2022. Venus began that period in late Capricorn conjunct Pluto, went stationary retrograde at 27 Capricorn, and was retrograde in that sign during the exact square. It remained retrograde in Capricorn through the entire period of the “hot zone” of the square. So we got two Mercury retrogrades and a Venus retrograde as influences in those squares!

This fourth and final square was activated in June 2022, when Saturn began to retrograde back to this square. The square was in orb by mid-July, with the exact square activated in late August and lasting until early November, with the exact square happening at 19 Aquarius to 19 Taurus. In late August through September 4, Venus was in Leo. The rest of September Venus was in Virgo. In October, Venus will be in Libra until the 23rd, when it moves into Scorpio.

That means we have a rich backdrop to the Uranian energies in play via this square, since Venus will have occupied a third of the zodiac during the time the square is active. This square now has Mercury retrograde in Libra and Virgo, showing an intense period of those two signs being highly active during this friction.

I gave you the following paragraphs in June 2021, so for your reflection and reconsideration during this Mercury retrograde, here’s a new look at last year’s squares and their impact.

The First Saturn Square Uranus

The first square occurred on February 17, 2021, from 8 Aquarius to 8 Taurus with both planets in direct motion. Because of the “orb of intensity,” it means we were in the heart of the first square all of February and the first 10 days of March. Mercury was speeding up, about to go stationary direct, showing forward momentum, if slow.

The weeks of the heart of that square were kicked off by Venus’ conjunction with Saturn and square to Uranus between February 2 and 10. Mercury was crashing into retrograde before the Inferior Conjunction, showing lots of roundabout and indirect energies swirling around that conjunction. At the exact conjunction, Mercury was conjuncting Saturn from 12 Aquarius, its stationary direct degree, implying that our “fusion of life and mind” impacting the following weeks featured taking a new look at Saturn from different angles of understanding, with a “backward looking Saturn” dominating that period. So that first square ruled the period between February and Saturn’s station in May which began the heart of the second square, which is where we were last June.

The Second Saturn Square Uranus

The second square occured on June 14 from Saturn retrograde at 14 Aquarius square Uranus at 14 Taurus. Because of the orb of intensity, it means we began to experience the heart of that second square beginning at Saturn’s retrograde station which lasted through July 3. Mercury was again slowing rapidly when Saturn was on its station, and was in the heart of the retrograde during the second square which happened just after the Inferior Conjunction.

At the exact square, the Sun was on the exact degree where Mercury went stationary retrograde, Venus was exactly sextile Uranus, and Mars was exactly binovile Uranus. That was very beneficial for Uranus, since its ruler Venus is in a very productive aspect with Uranus, and Mars added a dose of patience and higher realizations.

The Third Saturn Square Uranus

The third square occured December 23/24, with the heart of that square beginning December 12 and lasting until January 7. While Mercury was direct in motion, the major player in that one was Venus retrograde in Capricorn, ruling Uranus and itself ruled by Saturn. So while Saturn in Aquarius was the major influence in the first square, and Uranus in Taurus was the major influence in the second square, Saturn again ruled the stage during the time of the third square.

As Uranus made its final biseptile with Pluto, that time began a period of a highly irrational period, and it’s safe to say 2022 sure has been highly irrational! The third square also had Venus conjunct Pluto also making a biseptile to Uranus, Mars sextile Saturn, and Jupiter at 30 Aquarius in the Transfiguration Zone, launching us all both “back to the future” and “into the Cosmos!

So the first square had the Sun at 30 Aquarius, and the final square had Jupiter at 30 Aquarius. That implies the illumination we found between February and late May 2021 was related to the truths and opportunities which will opened earlier this year.

The Fourth and Final Saturn Square Uranus

It’s happening now. It began with Mercury approaching its shadow zone, will be forming throughout the retrograde period, and continue after Mercury goes direct. The first two weeks of October feature the Sun and Venus both in a Grand Air Trine with Mars and Saturn, creating a very beneficial stabilizing energy which can be demonstrated through Saturn’s square to Uranus.

Because Libra is a Venus-ruled sign, Venus will be exceptionally powerful and influential in October during the most intense period of the square. The fly in the ointment is that when they make trines to Saturn they’ll also make quincunxes to Uranus, accenting the “expansion through sacrifice” quality of that aspect.

Summing Up

The first square primarily affected 6-10 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. The second square primarily affected 12-16 degrees of these signs, and the third square primarily affected 10-14 of the fixed signs. So it’s clear that the first part of 2021 put pressure on the first decan of the fixed signs, and the second half of the year into 2022 put pressure on the second decan of those signs. This final square primarily affects 17-21 degrees of those Fixed signs.

Remember that the 2021 and 2022 transits in Aquarius and Taurus activated the square, either directly or indirectly, and transits in Leo and Scorpio have created evolutionary T-squares which have helped us integrate many things while moving some old stuck material down the timestream. The Leo transits have required good Scorpio responses; Scorpio transits, including those coming in November, will require good Leo responses.

So at this time, both Saturn and Uranus retrograde (along with Mercury for a few weeks!) are giving us a review. This is putting major pressure on any planets we have between 17-21 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, as well as 2-6 degrees of Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, and Aries. However, if Saturn is favorable to any planet in your chart, you can release that positive energy through Uranus, and if Uranus is favorable to any planet in your chart, you can release that positive energy through Saturn.

The tensions of the square may be released through either of the planets making the square. The trick is to take the positive building energies of aspects to either of these planets to release the positive energies through the planet in square. So demonstrate favorable Uranian energy through Saturn, and favorable Saturn energy through Uranus. The friction of Saturn square Uranus is helping us to understand our ability to make conscious choices about what to do and what can be ignored.

This square allows us to see the permanent patterns behind all things even as there is tremendous catabolic activity breaking down old structures, rules, and limitations. We all are seeing what’s important and learning to ignore the unimportant while expressing our part to play in the larger spiritual group(s) we’re involved in, demonstrating good Leo and/or Scorpio energies as circumstances require. Trust the process which brought you to this point of revelation and relative peace and enjoyment, since it opens many doors to new vistas.

Because the void created by a square is both the problem and the solution, show heart, strength, nobility, courage, concentration, and the willingness to release to attract. Understanding which Leo and/or Scorpio qualities are needed in conflicts or resistant circumstances will yield the best results.
