A near-Blood Moon arrives this month as a deep partial lunar eclipse. With 93–96% of the Moon in Earth’s shadow it will appear strongly reddish across the Americas, Europe and Africa. The classic ritual below works perfectly for these current release-and-renewal energies.

Rituals have been used for centuries to help set intentions and manifest dreams and wishes, and tonight on September 27th at around 5pm PDT as the Eclipse begins, is a powerful time to conduct one.

This Eclipse is all about opening a new gateway into a new level of consciousness. This means that it is a powerful time to release the old and a great time to welcome in the new. It is also the perfect time to set an intention to break old habits from the past, particularly ones that you may have been dealing since the first Blood Moon Eclipse began back in 2014.

There are many ways to conduct a ritual but the most important thing is to ensure that your ritual speaks to you. This means that you should only use objects or conduct practices that feel good to you and resonate with you on a deeper level.

To give you an idea of what ritual you can perform on this final Blood Moon Eclipse (which won’t be repeated for another 33 years or so) here is the ritual that I have planned:

Smoke or Cleansing: it is important when setting up a ritual space to ensure that it is cleansed and feels safe. To do this you can either use incense, sage, a powerful cleansing crystal or singing bowls. For my rituals, I often cleanse the space and my aura with sage and singing bowls.

Set an overall intention: the theme of this Eclipse is really about releasing and letting things go especially in matters surrounding the heart, self-love and healing. Try to think of an area that you have been struggling with that relates to one of these topics and then use it as the focus for your ritual. You may also want to write it down, for example –

“My Intention for this Ritual is to help heal my heart of old patterns and beliefs in all issues surrounding my heart and my relationships.”

A Symbol for Endings: in order to welcome in the new intention you have to be willing to let things go that are no longer serving you. To symbolize what you are choosing to let go of you may want to make a list of all the behaviors you want to abolish or you may simply want to use a crystal, card or statue as a representative.

The goddess Kali symbolizes death and rebirth cycles as does a Phoenix. For my ritual, I will be using the goddess Kali and the symbol of the Phoenix to represent the releasing of old habits and behavior patterns that are no longer serving me.

A Flame or Light: to me, flames represent light, oneness and hope which is why I will be using a candle in my ritual. Fire has long held significance in many rituals however, what is most important is that it means something to you. If you do choose to include a candle in your ritual try to give it a significance that means something to you.

Crystals/Flowers: crystals and flowers are powerful energy conductors and receivers. Using a crystal in your ritual is is a great way to store the energy of your intention and helps to intensify the process. Flowers are a great way to symbolize new life, creation and heart cleansings. The crystal or flower that you choose can be dependent on your personal preference, your intention or also their metaphysical meaning.

For my ritual I will be using amethyst, rose quartz and pink selenite as these all hold significance for me as and my intention.

Writing/Dancing/Chanting: I always use writing as part of my rituals because it really helps me to get clarity and guidance however, if writing doesn’t work for you feel free to use dancing, chanting or singing. I usually use the writing part of my ritual to welcome in the new and to set new goals or intentions for the future. Sometimes I also receive channeled messages. Again, choose whatever works for you.

Constructing the ritual

Start with cleansing and setting your intention
Through the ritual you may want to write, dance or chant/sing in order to release all that no longer serves you. If you have written down a list of things to let go of then you may want to burn the paper. If you are using a symbol you may want to speak to your symbol and ask for a cleansing. Basically, there should be some act that helps you feel that you are really letting go, whether it is through burning, breathing or ripping up paper.
The final step of the ritual should be a positive welcoming of the new. This can be set through writing/dance/chanting or through simply offering a prayer or blessing. This is where you can charge up your crystal, channel with your spirit guides or welcome in the new with a special symbol.
