How to Use a Pendulum

How to Use a Pendulum

Pendulums remain one of the simplest and fastest methods for divination.

For centuries, they’ve been trusted tools to glimpse the future and uncover answers to life’s urgent questions.

While pendulums are user-friendly at their core, mastering their use for divination involves more than meets the eye. To get accurate readings, preparation and care are essential before posing your questions.

This guide outlines the key steps, precautions, and practices to follow for effective pendulum divination.

Step 1: Choosing Your Pendulum

Pendulums come in diverse shapes, sizes, and materials. Popular options include gemstone, metal, and wooden pendulums—each with unique properties.

Gemstone pendulums, crafted from natural stones, harness the inherent energies of their materials. These energies amplify the pendulum’s swing, delivering clearer answers. Cleansed properly, gemstones offer a pure, powerful connection for divination.

Metal pendulums, often made of brass, chrome, pewter, or steel, rank just behind gemstones. Their magnetic properties enhance swing strength, providing precise responses to your queries.

Wooden pendulums, typically hand-carved from various woods, are less ideal. Wood struggles to retain energy, resulting in weaker swings and less reliable readings.

When selecting a pendulum, ensure its solid but not overly heavy—too much weight hinders movement, while too little lacks stability. Many experiment with pendant necklaces as pendulums. While these can swing, their shape lacks the precision of traditional pendulums, which are designed with pointed ends to channel energy effectively from diviner to tool.

Using jewelry may lead to inconsistent or inaccurate results, as the energy transfer misses the focused point traditional pendulums provide. For best outcomes, stick to classic pendulum designs.

Step 2: Cleanse Your Pendulum

Before diving into divination, cleansing your pendulum is a must. This clears residual energies and aligns it with your intent.

A simple method is to use sage incense or a smudge stick. Light it until it smokes generously, then pass your pendulum through the smoke several times. Add a prayer or intention for extra potency if desired.

For gemstone pendulums, a salt water bath works well. Mix cold water with purification or Dead Sea salt, then dip your pendulum in and out a few times. Dry it thoroughly afterward. Avoid this method for metal or wooden pendulums, as salt can corrode or damage them—stick to sage smoke instead.

Step 3: Use Your Pendulum

With your pendulum cleansed, it’s time to begin. Experts recommend a protection ritual or prayer before starting. Divination tools like pendulums open pathways to your subconscious and the spirit realm, intentionally or not. Spirits may be drawn to assist—or interfere—whether summoned or not.

Skipping protection risks inviting unwanted energies, so proceed with caution if you forgo this step.

Hold the pendulum by its chain between your thumb and index finger. Rest your elbow on a steady surface, letting the pendulum hang freely with enough slack to swing. Keep your hand still and shield the pendulum from drafts or air currents.

Close your eyes, clear your mind, and visualize your subconscious opening like a door. Picture energy flowing from this door, up through you, and into the pendulum. Focus on this for a few minutes to charge it—enhancing its power and accuracy.

When ready, open your eyes, fix your gaze on the pendulum’s tip, and ask it to show you “yes” (e.g., “Show me Yes”). Note the direction it swings—back and forth or circular. Repeat for “no” (“Show me No”), ensuring it stops fully before shifting direction. These movements define your pendulum’s language.

Start with simple, verifiable questions—“Is my name…?” or “Do I live in…?”—to test accuracy. Then move to your deeper inquiries. Keep your mind blank as you ask; overthinking can sway the pendulum consciously, while the subconscious holds the truest insights.

If spirits join your session, the pendulum might swing vigorously. Benevolent spirits can sharpen answers, but tricksters or malevolent entities may mislead or disrupt. Discernment remains key to navigating these unseen influences.
