An Astrological Overview of February 2023
Category: Astrological News Written by Robert Wilkinson
As the editor of the Astrology Arizona newsletter, I compose an overview of each month. Today we take a look at the primary factors for the month.
The Overview for February
This year the month of February is full steam ahead! All the planets are in direct motion, moving forward with some accelerating quickly after their recent retrograde periods. This month renews the larger Aquarian pulse, giving new impetus to the long wave Aquarian cycles set into motion in all our charts in 2020!
Mars is finally direct after many months slow or retrograde! We now continue to re-trace the shadow zone from 9 to 26 Gemini a third time which will give us all a sense that things are moving forward. Hopefully what we’ve learned about a healthy Mars in Gemini expression in our charts will be made manifest in positive ways.
This month brings another period of maximum compression of planets between Capricorn and Gemini, which is not as narrow as those of past years where all the planets were compressed in a span less than a trine! The inner planets are spread out this month, with Mercury in Capricorn, Sun in Aquarius, and Venus in Pisces most of the month. That places all three within the outer planet occupied zone of Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn in Aquarius, Neptune in Pisces, Jupiter in Aries, and Uranus in Taurus. Regard this period as a time of spiritual harvest for the year with major renewal already underway!
Because the inner planet conjunctions with the outer planet spiritual heavyweights renew many important cycles between January and May, expect some things to end with a new focus of spiritual energy for the year. The inner planets transiting the outer planet span is a time to pull the energies inward for these few months, with the Moon the key to effective expression. When the Moon is between Capricorn and Gemini, we’ll feel more “enclosed,” whereas when the Moon is between Leo and Scorpio, it will be the focus for all the other planetary energies as a nozzle pointing us to right action.
Remember this month is under two major influences which began in late January. As usual, we begin the month under the influence of the late January New Moon at 2 Aquarius, activating a mobilization which will “liberate us from adverse conditions through spectacular events” which spur us to action. As this was the SRX degree of Saturn in 2020 when the pandemic hit, the period of late January through late February puts the spotlight on those lessons, as well as the Grand Mutation at 1 Aquarius in December 2020.
That New Moon in the axis of the Ruler/Noble archetype has been on display since then, coming to some public expression at the Full Moon of February 5 at 17 Aquarius/Leo. That will assist the New Moon energies by helping us find “protective agencies” as we “sleep after our gold strike,” expressed in some form of active rebirth aimed at the release of energy.
When Jupiter entered Aries in May 2022 we launched into a new era which is flaming on quickly, renewing its fiery expression and accelerating like a rocket ship having revisited its conjunction point with Mars at 4 Aries in the third week of January. That conjunction began a 2 year cycle of learning how to enjoy life more naturally on our own terms. Jupiter moving through Aries gives an Aries backdrop to planets we have in Sagittarius and Pisces, as well as the houses where we have these signs on the cusp.
Jupiter is also rapidly approaching the launch of another major long term healing and mentoring cycle when Jupiter conjuncts Chiron in March at 15 Aries. That begins a long wave Chiron cycle which will last until the Summer of 2036. As an aside, when Chiron transits between Aquarius and Gemini, it moves relatively slowly and has conjunctions with Jupiter about every 13 years. However, it can take 19-20 years for the next conjunction after Gemini or Cancer. That means once the conjunction at 16 Gemini happens in the Summer of 2036, then we won’t have another conjunction of Jupiter and Chiron until the Spring of 2056 in Aquarius.
Saturn is now at the end time of its transit of Aquarius. Its entry into Aquarius between March and July 2020 shook up the world and galvanized us to action. Its re-entry in December 2020 preceded Jupiter’s entry into that sign by a few days, and their conjunction then created the Grand Mutation at 1 Aquarius. That conjunction ended a 200 year Earth era and began a 200 year Air era, and set the social-cultural conditions for the greater Aquarian 20 year era now developing.
During all of 2021 and 2022 we’ve been learning how we want to contribute to a greater future-oriented vision, and how to manage our feelings and our individual spirituality. This month Saturn continues to crystallize what we need to learn about the second half of Aquarius, with the theme of “Management.” Its October station encouraged us in November to rise to some type of urgent need, “emergency,” or “an exaggeration of life problems.” The first week of February gives us a chance to add to something valuable in our understanding, the second and third weeks are about anticipating the future, and the last week begins the crystallization of a major transfiguration in our lives.
Planets Slowing Down, Speeding Up, or Shifting Signs
In February nothing is slowing down and everything is speeding up! Mercury will accelerate rapidly all month, Venus remains at maximum cruising speed, and Mars is now direct and picking up speed for many months to come. Jupiter’s accelerating by the day, and Saturn’s picking up speed. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are all direct and also speeding up. None of the planets will go retrograde until Mercury’s next retrograde which begins in mid-April.
In February three planets change signs. This month the Sun, ruler of Leo and Cancer, will give us two (Aquarius and Pisces), Mercury, ruler of Gemini and Virgo, will give us two (Capricorn and Aquarius), and Venus, ruler of Taurus/Libra, will give us two (Pisces and Aries). By March, we’ll see SIX planets changing signs in one month!
After its long retrograde, Mars is finally direct and picking up speed by the week! It went stationary direct at 9 Gemini, with a theme of being a Zen archer, sure in your aim as a result of your training these past few months. This will be a theme for this year and the next. Mars will continue to move forward in Gemini through late March, so adapt! Mars in Gemini is versatile, but can get too spread out in “multi-tasking” mode.
Mars is activating the house(s) where we have 11 through 19 Gemini. So the entire month, Mars is in the Libra decan of Gemini, ruled by Venus with an extra dose of the Sun. While Mars is in Gemini, the position of Mercury has been and continues to be important in how Mars expresses its energies.
Mercury in Capricorn through February 11 brings a very favorable organization and discipline to Mars, since Capricorn is the sign of Mars’ exaltation, or “grounds of greatest growth.” That makes the first third of the month excellent for organization, reorganization, and renewal of our group intention and effort. When Mercury enters Aquarius, its sign of exaltation, it will bring a broader vision and altruism to Mars’ expression.
Between February 1-10, Mars will prove agitating to those with planets between 11-13 degrees of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Between February 11-20, it will have the same effect on planets between 13-17 degrees of the Mutable signs. And between February 20-28, it will agitate planets between 17-20 of those signs.
February begins with Mars just coming off a trine from the Sun and a sesquisquare from Mercury. There is also a square from Venus for the first week of February, urging us not to get deflected by passing things, and to make sure we’re using the right means to get to our ends.
The main aspect in play between mid-January and mid-February is the powerful Mars biseptile Saturn, which continues to bring major turning points, choices and changes related to any planet we have near 23-27 Aquarius, 15-19 Aries, 7-11 Gemini, 29 Cancer-3 Leo, 21-25 Virgo, 12-16 Scorpio, and 4-6 Capricorn. The time trigger will be the period when the Sun conjuncts Saturn and biseptiles Mars, involving the rulers of half of our houses!
The second half of February shows Mercury trine Mars just as Mars is tredecile Saturn, promising stability and serendipity in getting information and ideas which prepare us for the future or help us with “breaking out of our chrysalis” and entering a profound transfiguration of some sort. Productive compassion and needed closures are featured the last half of February, so let go, let God, and face forward, since there are new Soul experiences as we end February and begin March.
As I’ve offered before, when Mars is within a degree of forming or separating from a hard aspect with a planet, slow down and show deliberation and caution in how you use force. Hard aspects to/from Mars always require that we moderate or antidote impulsiveness and impatience.
This month the sign focus is on signs within the outer planet occupied zone. The first two weeks has a heavy Capricorn emphasis which immediately shifts to more of an Aquarian emphasis. While Mercury maintains a Capricorn energy through mid-February, when the Sun enters Aquarius, we’ll begin a major concentration of that Air energy.
The end of the month shows Venus heralding this year’s Pisces experience. So we’ll continue to have at least one planet in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini, with the primary emphasis on Capricorn and Aquarius.
We’re Actors On A New Stage With A New Set
As I mentioned earlier, the Grand Mutation of Jupiter conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius began a new 20 year Aquarian Era in December 2020, as well as a new 200 year Era, moving global energies out of Earth and into Air. We’ve begun to grow beyond the materialism of the past 200 years and have entered two centuries of Air emphasis, with its qualities of relatedness, receptivity, versatility, movability, lightness, and cooperative ideas, visions, and ideals.
The 2020 Solar eclipse on the Summer Solstice has accompanied a grand reorientation where we have been accepting new allegiances and life directions, while the December 2020 Solar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius is still helping us remove blocks to our happiness. The June 2021 Solar eclipse at 20 Gemini has facilitated the end of irrelevant and extraneous ideas from our decision making process, and the extremely beneficial Total Solar Eclipse at 13 Sagittarius in December 2021 gave us a promise of major gifts and unique interactive opportunities which will be perfect for whatever we need. Rewards have come and more are coming these next 3 years!
We’re still "under the beams" of the Solar Eclipses we experienced in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, and these “cosmic recyclers” continue to remove all that we no longer need in our lives. Take note of where you have 1 Cancer, 24 and 13 Sagittarius, 20 Gemini, 11 Taurus, and 2 Scorpio, since 1 Cancer aligns us with a larger reality, 24 Sagittarius helps us find happiness, 13 Sagittarius gives us a new identity and love, 20 Gemini removes what cannot be assimilated or communicated, 11 Taurus will help us remove “weeds from our garden of Life and Mind,” and the recent one at 2 Scorpio is helping us release attachments from the past as we enter a more complex social experience.
Last May’s eclipses with Sun in Taurus have begun to shut down old value systems in that sector, as well as the Scorpio sector via the May Full Moon Wesak Festival eclipse. November’s Total Lunar Eclipse Full Moon at 17 Taurus/Scorpio is helping us tap our spiritual power and focus it through our “hearing our inner God” and allowing our Higher Self to transform our lower self and worldly expression. You can find out more by going to the articles posted not long ago.
As we study how successive Eclipses have affected various areas of our charts and lives, we can get a sense of the utility of these “Cosmic Recyclers” in removing what we no longer needed in those areas, creating a void which attracted new life experiences. They invite us to look back, and then forward, to see the continuity of “letting go, taking in, letting go, taking in” across the years.
The Grand Irrationality
In February, the 7-pointed “Star of Destiny" I’ve termed The Grand Irrationality is in play when Mercury forms a septile to Neptune and biseptile to Uranus between February 10-14, and again when Venus conjuncts Neptune and septiles Uranus in mid-month. These will activate all 7 zones, making the middle third of the month very intense as we move through the profound choices and changes indicated by these aspects. This heralds what will be triggered by the Sun and Mercury when they transit late Pisces in mid-March.
All of the septile-series 7th harmonic aspects from the inner planets to the outer spiritual planets represent turning points at the hard edge of revolutionary change we’ve been going through for a while. Obviously, this is activated every time the Moon moves through one of the seven “hot zones” of this evolutionary configuration. All septile-series aspects are irrational points representing “forks in the road of destiny” in any larger cycle. If you have a planet or point near any of the seven zones, your life is sure to be affected. In February these zones are around 1-5 Aquarius, 22-26 Pisces, 14-18 Taurus, 5-9 Cancer, 27 Leo- 1 Virgo, 18-22 Libra, and 9-13 Sagittarius.
During the periods these 7th harmonic aspects are in play, if things get weird or crazy, be clear about the choices you’re making. While a lot won’t “make sense,” it doesn’t have to; just be clear about what you’re doing and why. Even though there may be interactions with unreasonable or irrational people, we still have the power to respond in productive ways.
As with “hard” aspects to and from Mars, if that planet (or really any planet) is involved in any non-rational aspect, whether one to our natal Mars or transiting Mars making a non-rational aspect to one of our natal, progressed, or solar return planets, it’s a time to be cautious during the period when the aspect is within a degree of forming or separating. Things have a way of getting strange during 7th harmonic aspects, so those are times to be especially deliberate and thoughtful in choosing our responses.
Primary Action Beats for the First Half of the Month
February begins under the influence of the late January New Moon at 2 Aquarius, putting the spotlight on that house in our charts. That New Moon was on a degree of some sort of “unexpected thunderstorm” which will mobilize us and free us from some “adverse situation.” This month is about fellowship and the birth of many things. As it’s on the degree where Saturn went stationary retrograde in the Spring of 2020, the focus from now until the next New Moon is on what we’ve been mobilized to do and what we’ve been liberated from since then.
From the beginning of the month, all the planets are moving fast or picking up speed, indicating the entire month should bring rapid developments, especially with Jupiter racing through the first part of Aries! The first week begins with Sun square Uranus indicating a need for clear thinking and acting without impulse or reactivity! Be true to your heart’s desire, and be wholehearted in dedicating yourself to fulfilling that.
We also have Venus square Mars, so make sure you’re using the right means to achieve your ends, and try not to get distressed by passing distractions. However, with Venus sextile Uranus also in play for the entire first week into the second, it shows that what Venus builds with Uranus can be demonstrated through the Venus square to Mars, as well as the Sun square to Uranus. In this case, Mars releases the power of the sextile in one way, and the Sun releases the power in another way. Given the Sun and Mars are still in a wide trine, this is a very harmonious interaction of planets which will benefit our charts in countless ways, since Venus and Uranus help our Earth and Water planets, whereas the Sun and Mars help our Fire and Air planets.
February 5th brings the Full Moon at 17 Aquarius/Leo. This puts the focus on finding and using protective mechanisms as we rest after some labor, expressed as a heartfelt rebirth we share with others. This is a time to cultivate heart connections with others, though at some point it will necessitate a form of “expansion through sacrifice” because the Moon forms a Yod with Mercury sextile Neptune on February 6. The sextile will be productive for understanding how to be organized and disciplined to accomplish some ideal.
The first week of the month shows the Moon transiting between late Gemini and late Virgo, and the second week features the Moon between late Virgo and mid-Sagittarius. Given the other positions, it means that the Moon becomes the nozzle for the release of all the other planetary energies when it transits between late Cancer and early Sagittarius, so if you’re wondering how to focus during the first half of the month, look to the Lunar sign.
The second week of February opens with Venus exactly sextile Uranus, followed by Mercury conjunct Pluto, finishing the inner planet conjunctions with Pluto for 2023. This should help us “see to the core” of things and people, with an ability to cut through obstacles by seeing the most direct and efficient way to do something. Be alert for hidden agendas or a sense that there is more to be known than what we’re hearing or reading about.
Mercury then enters Aquarius on February 11, shifting the energies of Gemini and Virgo planets and houses in our charts, and renewing the Aquarian vision set loose at the Grand Mutation. The rest of the second week has Mars sextile Chiron, furthering our knowledge in anticipation of the new 13-14 year cycle about to begin when Jupiter conjuncts Chiron in a few weeks.
The second week finishes with Venus conjunct Neptune and the impending Sun conjunct Saturn, ending the 2022 cycles and beginning the 2023 cycles involving these inner planets with those outer planets. The Moon in Virgo for February 7-8 should be good for getting things done, while the Moon in Libra will bring mixed signals on February 9-10, ultimately resolving in an understanding. The Moon in Scorpio on Feb 11-13 brings cross currents, sacrifices, and adjustments, and ends its time as a nozzle for the other planets. The first half of the month ends with Moon in Sagittarius on February 13-15, making for an adventurous and happy Valentine’s Day on the 14th for those who can navigate the Moon opposed Mars!
Primary Action Beats for the Second Half of the Month
The second half of the month begins with Moon in Sagittarius and Venus conjunct Neptune which should be a fairly productive and inspired time. That’s followed by Sun conjunct Saturn and Mercury sextile Jupiter, making for a serious and expansive week. The Moon enters Capricorn on February 16, renewing conjunctions with the outer planets from February 17 through 27.
February 18 brings the Sun’s entry into Pisces. That means the period from February 16-19 we will experience the illumination of “the Transfiguration Zone” where the cusp of the Age of Pisces meets the cusp of the Age of Aquarius. As that transit anticipates Saturn’s transit of that same zone at the end of February and beginning of March, open to the larger transfiguration process in play since March 2020 and get ready to step into a new realm wherever you have late Aquarius and early Pisces! The third week also brings us the New Moon at 2 Pisces on February 19, with the theme of self-preservation and the need for protection against unnecessarily assertive or aggressive social elements, and a suggestion to “lift ourselves to surer foundations.” As Venus sextiles Pluto and Moon conjuncts Saturn just before that Lunation, we’ll no doubt be seeing to the bottom of things in late February and the first half of March. Less than an hour after the New Moon, Venus enters Aries and begins its approach to conjunctions with Jupiter and Chiron in March. As Venus is at 30 Pisces for that New Moon, it initiates a month of “dreaming the future” before it’s made manifest, with that dream directly related to whatever was dreamed when Jupiter occupied the last two degrees of Pisces in November and December 2022. The third week ends with Mercury sextile Chiron and square Uranus, so slow down and remember you already know how to handle Mercury square Uranus based on whatever you had to do in early February when the Sun made those aspects. With the Moon in Pisces from February 19-21, it may get a bit spacey, so be aware of the flow and don’t be impulsive on the 20th. The fourth week of February kicks off with Mercury trine Mars, so use the last half of the month to get things done. Adapt with an eye to the big picture, find the right balance, rhythm, or perspective, and enjoy the momentum with the Moon in Aries from February 21 through 23. Keep it pleasant and steady with Moon in Taurus from February 24-26, and the end of February has such great aspects with Moon in Gemini I’ll wish you all a great time as we prepare for the major shifts in March! The end of February also is the time when Venus approaches its conjunction with Jupiter, so spirits should be very high at that time!
This is the thirteenth month of the North Node in Taurus era! We’re now in a time of our greatest development coming through the sign of appreciation, value, and enjoying the best life has to offer. The recent eclipses are already assisting us in letting go of strong feelings related to the past, as well as all which blocks us from going deeper into our connection to Source. With Taurus growth and Scorpio release, keep it simple and steady, showing what you know by releasing what needs releasing and attracting what needs attracting.
Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aries in late May 2022 began a 2 year adventure in opening to new ways of enjoying life and new freedom to be as authentic as we need to be. That cycle and other Aries cycles are about to be set into motion in March and April as the inner planets all make conjunctions with Jupiter and Chiron. This month helps us move out of the past and into the rapidly approaching future.
Our wise friend Saturn continues to help us manage Aquarius energies in our lives, with training, transformation, conscious choice, and the final exam on the skillful use of spiritual power the first part of the month. The middle of February gives us visions of the future and the ability to prepare in advance for what’s coming, while the last 10 days of the month bring us to the threshold of transfiguration when Saturn transits the last two degrees of Aquarius.
Our recent Aries initiatives are now expanding quickly, quickening our pace and promising new stability and enjoyment by this Summer. With Aquarius energies front and center, keep the wider view in mind as you navigate rapidly changing conditions. As with last month, much will continue to leap forward as we renew the Aquarian promise in our lives.
The Sun in Aquarius is a time to see the Light of “the greatest good for the greatest number” on material, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels of life. This is an idealistic vision of how personal power when used within a group purpose can accomplish things we cannot achieve alone. The infinite potential of Sagittarius, having found structure in Capricorn, now moves into a future oriented vision of an ideal which can outlive us.
We now begin our third year of the new era, as this month renews the Solar and Mercurial Aquarian power and understanding set into motion in 2020. Having harvested the 2022 work in Capricorn, we’ve now reset the karma of the larger process and continue our journey into the Aquarian vision which will find its initial grounding when Jupiter is in Taurus. Since Aquarius and Pisces are active this month, see what must be forgiven to substantiate the new vision while leaping forward whenever possible.
The promise of the 2022 Aquarian energies are now tallied, with the new 2023 Aquarian energies powering up over the next few weeks. Expect rapid developments over the next few weeks which will build momentum for Saturn’s entry into Pisces and Pluto’s entry into Aquarius in March. As Jupiter is racing forward at maximum speed, face the future and don’t clutch as things rapidly accelerate. This broadens the Aquarian vision through direct action, and guarantees us a rapid expansion of awareness in our Aries sector in 2023. We are unique sparks of Light which are part of the greater infinite Light Field. The vision of 2021 has now manifested in a new iteration, with new visions and harvests coming the next few weeks.
As we’re now at the beginning of the third year of a new 20 year and 200 year cycle, remember a new era has dawned. Have courage and take the initiative to leave the Earth and fly free into the Air of what’s opening as the Grand Mutation expands its promise into the Divine transfigured ideal of a more just truth and future. This month brings the promise of adventures to come, so wield your spiritual powers of gratitude and appreciation for all we have and all which has brought us to exactly where we are, for better or worse. In any case, we stand at the end of the Pluto in Capricorn era, and soon will begin to experience the dawning of the coming Pluto in Aquarius era.
We now stand on the threshold of transfiguration. Find your heart strength and open to finding new forms of genuine happiness appropriate for who you are now, and who you are becoming relative to just a few months ago.
The 2022 Capricorn and Aquarius transits began a new chapter of utilizing forms of personal power in Capricorn to serve the emerging Aquarian ideal. A huge part of the past died in 2021 and 2022 and a new expansive inspired energy came in via the Mars conjunction with Jupiter in Aries. The past is over and we all have begun our trek into a new world of new potential, new adventures, and new ways to enjoy being ourselves while doing our work of Destiny. Open to the abundance of the process of growth, since we are all on a rocket ship to the stars!
