How Will the Superior Conjunction at 17 Scorpio Manifest in the Future?

Today we explore the Superior Conjunction of November 8, 2022 at 17 Scorpio and what it promises for the next 4 months until the next one on March 17 at 27 Pisces.

This “fusion of life and mind” will directly impact the rest of the Mercury direct period, as well as the first part of its next retrograde up to when the next Inferior Conjunction on January 7 at 17 Capricorn comes to the fore in the dance between Mercury and the Sun. As you can see, there are several overlapping points in this dance of retrograde and direct motions.

All previous superior and inferior conjunction points, as well as Mercury’s retrograde and direct stations, are triggered by subsequent transits long after Mercury was there. As Venus has already occupied this point in the past, the next time it’s triggered will be in November 2023 when Mercury, Mars, and the Sun all transit this point.

On a side note, because Mars will occupy Gemini until next March, 2023 will see a lot of Superior and Inferior conjunction points triggered. SRX and SD points too! When Mars transits 25 Cancer in mid-May 2023 it’ll trigger the Superior Conjunction degree of July 2022. And it will trigger the September Mercury retrograde points and the October direct point in late August and early September 2023, and as noted, the current Superior conjunction point in November.

Superior Conjunctions – A Brief Recap

As we covered in part 1, the superior conjunction occurs when Mercury (mind) conjuncts the Sun (life) when in direct motion, while the inferior conjunction is when Mercury (mind) conjuncts the Sun (life) when Mercury is retrograde. Each operates as a fusion of Life and Mind, but in each “Mind moves in a different direction.”

When either conjunction happens, it indicates that signals, messages, and ideas from either outer sources (Mercury direct) or subconscious sources (Mercury retrograde) will fuse with the life principle. This sets the tone for the lessons involving how our minds are relating to our lives during the weeks which follow the conjunctions.

Since its last retrograde, Mercury in direct motion has been moving faster than the Sun. It has now caught up to the Sun and making a “superior conjunction,” beginning a several week period when mind will race ahead of life, heralding things to come when the Sun transits the span Mercury will show us over the next few weeks. The degree of any superior conjunction shows how our perceptions have caught up with our lives, which can bring forth a new expression of our light.

The Sabian Symbol for the Superior Conjunction

The Solar-Mercurial degree symbol for the Superior Conjunction falls at 17 Scorpio, and it is said that the second third (decan) of any sign deals with the emotional and social levels of life. Being the second decan of Scorpio, it has a sub-influence of Pisces with an additional dose of the Sun. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth. (As it is the same degree as the Total Lunar Eclipse Full Moon, this is a huge influence at present!)

The Solar Sabian symbol for the 17th degree of Scorpio is “A woman the father of her own child.” In The Astrology of Personality, where Rudhyar uses the original Dr. Jones' class notes on the symbols, 17 Scorpio is one of “fullness of self-reliance and individual destiny,” “cooperation between spiritual and material agencies,” and “Pure self-revelation.”

In The Astrological Mandala, he says this degree is one of “A total reliance upon the dictates of the God-within,” where we experience “the result of a deep and complete concentration reaching to the innermost center of the personality where the Living God acts as a fecundating power.” Here we see the “potency of the inward way” where ego-surrender lead to dynamic manifestations of the Divine Will.

He says this “brings to us the realization of normally hidden potentialities,” where “Faith in the Divine” helps us become “A Mother of the Living God,” living a “transpersonal existence” that leads to “creative mutations.” Rudhyar says this degree falls in the Span of Appreciation, Act of Group Integration, and Scene of Faith on the Actional-Physical level.

Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, says this is a degree of "the eternal conflict between the practical involvements and the ideal potentialities of human nature” emphasized in our “conscious individuality,” where our “Soul feels the weight of (our) transient responsibilities while the indwelling and immortal spirit is sensitive to its need for an enduring place in the scheme of things.” Here our “recurrent virgin birth of self” meets our world “through their common center of reality.”

He offers the keyword NUCLEATION. When operating positively, the degree is "an illimitable self-potentiality with effective spiritual or ideal as well as practical or everyday orientations.”

Given the themes of this degree, we'll use the ”fusion of life and mind” through the next Inferior Conjunction to see the Light of surrendering to our inner knowing so we may find a “pure self-revelation” and see a way to bring Life and Mind together to achieve a “fullness of self-reliance and individual destiny.” This fusion of Life/Light and Mind requires that we become focused in some actional way, concentrating to contact the magnetic core of our faith and awareness.

The fact that this conjunction is one of the poles of awareness set up by its opposition to Uranus and this opposition is cut into a T-square by Saturn indicates this fusion of Life and Mind will lead to individualization through positive actions which may involve letting go to attract what we need. With Mercury collecting the Light to bring Venus into the mix, I can say this conjunction will yield pleasing forms of inner freedom by rejecting old external patterns and allegiances. Venus may bring “conflict between old and new perspectives” to this mind/life blend, so be willing to brave to storm as you find a new life order with fewer emotional attachments than before now.

Who Leads the Great Light Now That Mercury is Ahead of It?

At this conjunction, Mind is no longer following Life, trying to catch up to it. Now Mind races forward as herald, catching glimpses of knowledge, perception, and understanding that shows us where Life is headed in the near future.

When Mercury outraces the Sun and moves ahead of it, it no longer "leads the light." Now "Life" leads "Mind" even as Mind blazes the trail the Light will follow these next few weeks. This is the time when we stretch out into the future, with a period of looking back beginning late December at the next Mercury retrograde.

In this chart, since Mercury no longer leads the Sun, we are in the very rare position of not having any planet before the Sun. This is the “gateway to the Light” being the Light itself, with none other than it to greet the spiritual wanderer. The study of which planet leads the Sun is a crucial but often overlooked part of understanding how the planets work in sequence.

When Mercury moves in front of the Sun, the closest planet in a sign earlier than the Sun will be Mars retrograde at 25 Gemini. The Sun will continue to get farther and farther from Mars until they come full phase at their opposition on December 7/8 just after the Full Moon at 17 Gemini/Sagittarius. The next time any planet will lead the Sun will be after the next Inferior conjunction in early January, after which Mercury will again by “the entry to the Light.”

Because it’s so close to the Full Moon eclipse, the Moon is still very much a power player in a close opposition to Venus and square to Saturn. Besides the multi-planet T-square integrating and releasing powerful energies in the Fixed signs, we also see that these oppositions are harmonized by Neptune and Pluto, and then subsequently by Jupiter.

Of major import is the Moon at 20 Taurus septile Jupiter at the archetypalization degree at 30 Pisces, showing the next weeks will put many at a spiritual “fork in the road of destiny” which will be “pre-formed” by the dream we create between now and early 2023. Areas most affected include 28 Pisces-2 Aries, 19-23 Taurus, 11-15 Cancer, 3-7 Virgo, 24-28 Libra, 15-19 Sagittarius, and 7-11 Aquarius.

Be wholehearted in pursuing the goals which are an expression of your heart. When tempted to find a reason for procrastinating, instead just do whatever is your genius to do! By turnin g away from old socialized patterns and releasing whatever needs to be released, we will create voids which will attract more fulfilling ideas, relationships, values, and lives.

What’s Ahead?

This Superior Conjunction can fuse foresight and life experience to see how new forms of light, life, and perspectives can come forth these next few weeks. Because this “fusion of life and mind” takes place at 17 Scorpio, we enter a time of moving forward into a decisive future and fulfillment on the emotional and social levels of life leading us to inner spiritual power. Because Scorpio is associated with the archetype of the Warrior/Guardian, if there’s any question about whether a given experience is leading to loss or gain, regard it as a time to surrender to “the inward way” and the claiming of your spiritual power and ability to use it in higher service to further a greater good.

This will give us a chance to articulate our Light fused with “the Guide of Souls” to find how we can find the concentration we need to contact our inner infinite Source of knowledge and power. The house this conjunction falls in shows where Mind now leads Life, and will open doors of perception wherever it falls, with many things “coming together in the Light of Mind.

We can now accept our inner truths and ability to use spiritual power effectively as part of our life tool kit, and see a new level of spiritual integration in our purpose. Our Higher Self is both a guide and a protection when we reference it rather than externals or inner fears and assumptions. We now begin a period of unifying the inner and outer expressions of Being, and can wield spiritual power effectively.

As mentioned before, we will experience manifestations of the wisdom available to us as we “surrender to the god within,” with a huge activation when Mars crosses it this time next year. For now, this “fusion of Life and Mind” at 17 Scorpio sets a platform of new discoveries, new understanding, and new focus in the house where this conjunction occurs in our charts. In blending these principles we will see a shift in our affairs, attitudes, and understanding about those things symbolized by Mercury in Scorpio. These will open us to a heightened feeling-awareness as part of the larger transfiguration process in play this year and next as we dance at the intersection of Fate Street and Freewill Street on Eternity Boulevard.

Summing Up

Because this is Life and Mind fusing in Scorpio, see it all as the Guide of Souls having experienced the Great Light illuminating the need to accept that we ARE Divine Wisdom here to take the lead in our own Self-realization by going ever-deeper in our connection to Source. From here, even though Mercury will outrace the Sun for the next few weeks, it’s going to begin to slow down in speed, and will go retrograde on December 29 at 25 Capricorn, beginning our review of the theme for the year of 2022. You can find out more about that in other Mercury retrograde articles explaining that for quite a few years in a row, we’ve had specific themes related to Mercury retrogrades all year.

I’ll write more about this in late December when we’ll begin a review of how extreme circumstances and life purifications in play for several years now have brought us to a place of some sort of “transcendent security,” but in relatively comfortable circumstances. See the bigger picture, prune back whatever isn’t necessary, be well-considered before making a move, and remember when you’re at a fork in the road, take it!

All significant Mercury events give us a chance to check in with our inner Mercury to make sure we’re listening to its knowledge so we may be guided to our Souls. By how our Mercury works, we are led to the “Active Intelligence” of Divine Mind, or scattered confusion because of the inability of the lower mind to know anything.

As I explained in my book Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend, Mercury’s duality is “Life/Death,” so we can get a new look at how our consciousness and responses are either creative, destructive, or both, to cite the venerable Kabalistic Arhat Paul Foster Case. Mercury is where we learn if our mental processes are creating chaos and disorganized scattered conditions through ambivalence, and thus come to see how to use discernment to coordinate various functions to bring forth perfect knowing how to do whatever needs to be done. Understanding its influence as a factor for weeks to come is crucial to the smooth operation of what moves forward from here.
