Mercury Stations Retrograde & Jupiter Enters Aries

Mercury Stations Retrograde & Jupiter Enters Aries

May 6th ~ 13th

Mercury stations Retrograde May 10th

Study the past if you would define the future. ~ Confucius

Mercury stations retrograde on May 10th, at 4º Gemini 52’. It does so in the air sign of Gemini, and will retrograde back into the earth sign of Taurus on May 22nd. Mercury will then station direct on June 3rd, and re-enter Gemini on June 13th.

Air signs, such as Gemini, put a deal of emphasis on communications and social issues. You can throw in issues surrounding transportation and commerce with Gemini. Earth signs such as Taurus are more pragmatic, grounded and goal oriented.

No matter what the sign or element, when Mercury is retrograde we find ourselves ruminating and reflecting on the past. This can be useful because it allows us to bring things in perspective, and learn from our experiences. Reminiscing and recalling allows us to process and make sense of the events that have transpired and can help us to see alternatives or solutions. And this could be all the more so, because just prior to Mercury entering Gemini at the end of April, Mercury was sextile Jupiter, and will be so again over the next few weeks as Mercury appears to move back towards the sextile once again.

Mercury/Jupiter was trying to connect us with a much broader vision. To take a much higher view of things, and to do the right thing. And from that perspective we are not only able to see the ramifications of choices we have already made, but also what can come of the choices that are being made now. Mercury retrograde gives us permission to change our minds, and adapt to the changing circumstances of our lives.

There is also an element of judgment and justice with Mercury/Jupiter transits. And as Jupiter continues to be sextile Pluto this week there could be concerns about holding those in power accountable for their ethical and moral decisions and behaviors. This has become a huge issue in the United States with the leak of the recent Supreme Court draft of a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the law protecting abortion rights for women in the United States. As surprising as this all was as it was being revealed, in retrospect, it was not surprising at all. Especially in light of the current series of eclipses which we are currently in the throes of.

Scorpio has domain over sexual and reproductive issues, and with the upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio on May 16th, square limiting Saturn, we are seeing the outcome of oppressive and patriarchal control over women’s reproductive rights.

The Jupiter/Pluto cycle attempts to prove that the moral arc of the universe, albeit long, always bends towards justice. However with Saturn slowing for its station and square the upcoming Lunar Eclipse on the 16th, it could feel otherwise. Saturn will station for its own retrograde on June 4th, exactly square the Lunar Eclipse point, which is about when the decision by the Supreme Court was originally planned to be released.

As the retrograde Mercury now digs into the deeper intellectual conundrums of our lives, the Mercury/Jupiter transits allow us to consider our own relationship to whatever ethical and moral issues are being unearthed. Not only in the world at large, but in our personal lives as well.

What the retrograde phase of Mercury can be useful for (May 10th thru June 3rd):

  • Tying up loose ends: Starting new things can be riddled with indecision, learning curves and delays. And we may have to do things all over again later. However what these times can be really good for are bringing closure to, or ending things that are no longer serving the person that we are now, or hope to be in the future. That can include finishing up projects that have been sitting on the back burner for ages, or clearing out the clutter that has accumulated in our lives. This is when we add the important finishing touches to a project, edit that manuscript, empty those boxes, review, edit, reevaluate and revise.

  • Stress reduction: While still in Gemini it could feel like you are in a whirlwind of indecision and confusion when Mercury is retrograde. But on May 22nd, it returns to the placid and quiet terrain of Taurus. Stress can often increase during the Mercury retrogrades. So be preemptive. Make your life simpler. Schedule in personal time. And focus on those techniques and modalities that help you to reduce stress. And as we move into the retro in Taurus after the eclipses have passed, treat yourself to a massage, create your own spa day, indulge your senses.

  • Reunions: It is not unusual to return to the past along with your memories. Gemini is a sign that has to do with school mates, siblings, cousins, early childhood companions, neighbors. Don’t be surprised to see people popping up, or going back home to share old stories. This too is part of that need to assimilate and process.

  • Reflection: It is not unusual to have the past return, or to find ourselves in deep thought, remembering, recalling, revisiting and reflecting. Through this process we are given the opportunity to reassess old decisions, re-think the past, and bring it all into relief. This is how we learn. How we grow. And helps us to make better decisions in the future.

Challenges:

  • Communications, technology and transportation: These are the usual areas of consternation during the retrograde phases. Mercury has so much to do with our everyday lives including things like commerce, commuting, and sharing information, that it can be quite noticeable when it enters these phases every 100 days. Technology seems to go awry. Things need to be fixed or replaced. Words come out all wrong. Conversations are misconstrued. Therefore be clear about agreements. Read things several times and get a 2nd opinion. Get a warranty if you purchase new equipment. Bring a good book, carry on luggage, flexibility and lots of patience, and a sense of humor, while traveling.

  • Delays and changes in plans: We are being asked to turn our attention away from the outer world, and focus it within. This can be frustrating in our everyday lives, but it serves a purpose. Be prepared. Give yourself extra time to get places. Getting lost is part of the process. And know that changes and distractions are okay. And that includes giving yourself permission to change your mind.

These periods can occasionally feel chaotic and distracting. This may be all the more so falling within the bounds of the eclipses. However, Mercury in Gemini has one quality that should not be taken for granted, and that is the ability to see the irony and the humor in almost any situation. Use it.

Humor is the emotional chaos remembered in tranquility. ~ James Thurber

Jupiter enters Aries May 10th

I have a right to my anger, and I don't want anybody telling me I shouldn't be, that it's not nice to be, and that something's wrong with me because I get angry. ~ Maxine Waters

On May 10th Jupiter will emerge from the waters of Pisces and dive right into the fiery and righteous sign of Aries. Due to its rulership of the fire sign Sagittarius, Jupiter has an affinity for all of the fire signs where the freedom to grow and achieve our aspirations is unhindered. One of the qualities of Jupiter is to make things larger and exaggerate them. And in Aries that can include things like impetuousness, hastiness and the passionate ownership of our own Anger. Aries is a sign that leaps into action, is willing to take a stand, and take the initiative. Assertive, strong, courageous and enthusiastic, this is just the sort of motivation we might want to take on challenges or go in a new direction.

Aries is also a passionate and martial sign, where the temperature is raised, and everyone comes fully armed, ready to do battle. These too are qualities that can become exaggerated under the influence of Jupiter. This passionate assertion can be useful for achieving initiatives, entering into athletic competitions, and win causes, and take on even the most daunting of challenges. But it can also devolve into righteous indignation, especially if a cherished ideal or belief feels threatened.

Jupiter will station retrograde on July 28th, and so head back to Pisces in October for a few months before re-entering Aries again in December. It will most benefit the fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, as well as Gemini and Aquarius. This is true wherever you have Aries and the other fire signs in your natal chart. But it will especially benefit those fire signs in the first 10 degrees of the sign, as Jupiter will spend an unusual amount of time traveling back and forth between 0-9º of Aries. Those who have personal points at these degrees of the fire signs Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, and to some degree Gemini and Aquarius, are being asked to grow beyond their previous expectations of themselves. To think larger. Not in a crazy arrogant or unrealistic way, but just enough to expand your horizons and hopes for better things to come.

If we can temper that confidence and unbridled enthusiasm with wisdom and strategy, then there will be no holding us back from achieving our goals. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and as such represents the rebirth of our cherished ideals, and the opportunity to plant seeds for a New Vision for the future. Aries is a sign of hope and vast potential. The hope for better things to come.

Hope is not blind optimism. It’s not ignoring the enormity of the task ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path. It’s not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it. Hope is the belief that destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by the men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be. ~ Barack Obama (A Promised Land)
