Pluto in Aquarius Signals Massive Global Change Pt.1
Written by Robert Wilkinson
Pluto, Lord of the Underworld who teaches us the Law of Economy of Energy and the power of purification to assists us to become living manifestations of our highest spiritual Self, is now occupying Aquarius non-stop for many years to come.
We’re now solidly launched into a different era than we’ve been in which is sprouting seeds of the future which will rapidly grow after Jupiter conjuncts Pluto on the Angel Point in early 2033!
I gave you this material in early 2023 when Pluto began its long occupancy of Aquarius, having only returned to Capricorn once this year for a few weeks. We’re now officially done with the Pluto in Capricorn era! Even though both signs are ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is Cardinal Earth and Aquarius is Fixed Air. And we’ve had significant activity at 1 Aquarius for the past 4+ years, each one reinforcing the new Aquarian energies pervading our world.
As I offered before, Pluto symbolizes the power of ultimate transmutation through purification. It is the Shivaic “Pillar of Fire” no Being can fly over, tunnel under, or get around it. Pluto holds the secrets of the mystery of life, death, and rebirth, and rules the realm of the collective shadow material each of us lives within whether we know it or not. It is the eternal “seed power” of self-replication which survives the death of old forms.
It puts all it touches “under pressure,” so that like carbon in the Earth which becomes diamonds, our inner “carbon” is compressed and transformed so we become “the living Diamond Sutra” in the world. It rules all which is hidden, such as seeds and hidden treasures, as well as those things which are forbidden or terrifying. It represents our “personal hell” where we must strip away all pretense, all fear, and all need to control something beyond individual control.
As Pluto moves slower than any other planet between it and the Sun, when Pluto changes signs it marks a huge (if subtle) shift in collective consciousness. It breaks down old forms, killing out seeds which are incompatible with the evolutionary necessity of the times, and sprouting new seeds over very long periods of time which will develop according to their inherent pattern.
As it takes about 250 years to make a complete cycle through all the signs, and all the other planets move faster than Pluto, they all make many conjunctions with other outer planets which create long wave cycles affecting the entire world long after they happen. The most recent of these were:
Saturn conjunct Pluto at 23 Capricorn in January 2020, beginning a cycle lasting through their next conjunction at 15 Pisces in 2053;
Uranus conjunct Pluto at 17/18 Capricorn throughout 1964-65, lasting through 2104 with their next conjunction at 8 Taurus;
Neptune conjunct Pluto at 1891-92 at 8/9 Gemini, which lasts until 2384-85 when they conjunct at 13 Gemini.
Pluto Slowing Down in the 21st Century
In the modern era, Pluto entered Libra in October 1971, and left for the last time in August 1984. It entered Scorpio in November 1983, and left for the last time in November 1995. It entered Sagittarius in January 1995, and left for the last time in November 2008.
It entered Capricorn in January 2008 and has now left the sign for the last time in November 2024. It entered Aquarius for the first time on March 23, 2023, and is now going to be in that sign for 20 years beginning November 2024. It will enter Pisces for the first time in March 2043, and after leaving Aquarius for the last time in January 2044, will remain in Pisces through 2067 when it first enters Aries.
As you can see, the Cosmic Transformer was in Libra for 13 years, in Scorpio for 12, in Sagittarius 14, in Capricorn 17 years, in Aquarius 20 years, and in Pisces 23 years. Pluto is now moving into the signs of long duration, with the longest stay to come in Aries, Taurus, and Gemini. It will be in Taurus 32 years!
The Last Time Pluto Was In Aquarius Revolution Was in the Air!
We are now at a time paralleling the last time Pluto entered Aquarius. 2023 paralleled 1777, when Pluto in late Capricorn ducked into the first degree of Aquarius and then went back into Capricorn. 2024 paralleled 1778, when Pluto again entered Aquarius, moved to 2 Aquarius, and then retrograded back to the last degree of Capricorn before finally entering Aquarius for the long haul in late 1778.
In 2024 Pluto got to 3 Aquarius before retrograding back to the last degree of Capricorn. In 2025, Pluto will move forward to 4 Aquarius before retrograding back to 2 Aquarius where it goes direct in November 2025. In 1779, Pluto got to 4 Aquarius and then retrograded back to 2 Aquarius. In 1780, Pluto went forward to 6 Aquarius, then retrograded back to 3 Aquarius. In 2026, Pluto will move forward to 6 Aquarius, then then retrogrades back to 4 Aquarius.
The American Revolution was front and center during the 1777-1781 phase, while the Industrial Revolution took off tremendously from around 1760 through 1820. By the time Pluto was in the second half of Aquarius, we had the French Revolution, the ratification of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and the Washington presidency which established the prototype for all presidential succession since then, with only two notable exceptions, those being 1860 and 2020.
The last time Pluto transited Aquarius, the publication of Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, A Vindication of the Rights of Men, and The Rights of Man between 1789-1792 popularized “the rights of man” being greater than the alleged “divine rights” of kings. Revolutionary change in the realm of ideas was in the air everywhere, and new ideals of government came into being. It was the beginning of the non-aristocratic governmental model, and the idea that government should be responsive to people rather than dominate them.
It was during this time that technology began to evolve by leaps and bounds. That would imply the coming decades will bring revolutionary technologies, as well as the transformation of old technologies into new forms.
Of course, we were still in the Age of Pisces, so those Age of Pisces/Pluto in Aquarius seeds have been sprouting since then each time Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune transited Aquarius. Which brings us to the question:
Is this the beginning of the Age of Aquarius?
No, since we’re already on the cusp of the Age, and have been for a couple of centuries. But we’re getting there! As you’ve read in the article Uranus Awakened the Age of Aquarius, Neptune Dreamed It Into Collective Consciousness, and Pluto Will Sprout It Into Life, previous transits of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all contributed to the awakening “Aquarian Age” now on the horizon which indicates the second half of the 21st century will be radically different than the first half.
However, here’s where we have to understand that Cosmic Time is measured differently than human time. If a Great Age is approximately 2100 years, it means each degree of that sign is about 70 years. If we consider the last 1/10 of Pisces and the first 1/10 of Aquarius as the cusp where the two ages overlap, you can see how the shift takes over 400 years to happen!
I find it useful to regard the process of the new age will come about as a gradual “thickening” which strengthens the Aquarian energy with each pass of the outer planets through that sign. Each transit works its unique magic on the larger field and each builds on what has been growing from before then.
Pluto represents the long term seeds of things. It’s part of the Spiritual Invisible host, those being Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Uranus awakens, Neptune unifies, Pluto purifies and transforms, and TransPluto redeems over the long run.
When any of these change signs, it’s a huge deal for humanity. Being generational and subgenerational planets, we can’t take them personally, since they’re not personal. They’re transpersonal. So when one changes signs, it affects everyone on invisible levels. Here it may be useful to look back at your Capricorn houses which Pluto has occupied these past 16+ years to see what has been eliminated or transformed which led to the major changes which began in 2020 with the Grand Mutation at 1 Aquarius.
We can’t look at the coming Pluto in Aquarius era (2023-2043) without taking into account that Uranus and Neptune have already transited Aquarius in recent years. What Uranus awakened, Neptune dreamed into collective consciousness. These Aquarian energies are now being sprouted globally for the next 19 years.
Uranus and Neptune Have Awakened and Spread the Aquarian Energies for 200 Years
Uranus awakened the previous Pluto in Aquarius energies between 1828-1836 while Neptune dreamed that awakened energy into the collective field between 1834 and 1848. However, we were still in the Age of Pisces, so that was the dominant energy. Uranus again awakened new Aquarian energies 1912-1919. Each of these transits brought a new iteration of the greater Aquarius pulse, but within the transitional period at the end of the last Age.
The most recent Aquarian transits of Uranus and Neptune show that Uranus was in Aquarius from 1995-2003 while Neptune was in that sign from 1998-2011. Again, what Uranus awakened, Neptune spread throughout collective consciousness. During that time, Jupiter, the expander, went through Aquarius in 2009, making a conjunction with Neptune. That created an Aquarian cycle in play until 2163, the next Jupiter conjunct Neptune in Aquarius. (In the meantime, we had Jupiter conjunct Neptune at 24 Pisces in 2022, with the next one at 22 Aries in 2035.)
Besides these long wave outermost planetary cycles which influence the years following each conjunction, we have a very powerful social cycles set into motion every 20 years when Jupiter conjuncts Saturn. The conjunctions of Jupiter and Saturn mark points in time which begin widespread social and cultural changes. As mentioned earlier, their most recent conjunction at 1 Aquarius in December 2020 was called The Grand Mutation, since it ended 200 years of Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions in Earth signs and began 200 years in Air signs, moving our times out of the materialism of the past 200 years into the idealism of the next 200.
That’s important because the period of 1800-2000 was still within the influence of the conjunctions in Earth during the Age of Pisces, but now we have begun a 20 year Aquarian era which will give this Pluto in Aquarius 20 year period a much different expression than the one 240 years ago. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius, the Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions were the Fire signs of Aries and Sagittarius. In the coming 20 years the influence will be in Air signs. From now through 2040 the influence is under the 2020 Aquarius conjunction. After 2040 the influence will be in Libra. So the 18th century transit was influenced by Fire conjunctions, and the 21st century transit is influenced by Air conjunctions, and in between we’ve had 200 years of conjunctions in Earth signs.
Competing Capricorn and Aquarian Long Wave Cycles
So why doesn’t it seem like modern times aren’t so Aquarian? The reason why we don’t see more Aquarius energy and still see a lot of Capricorn energy is because in 2020, we had several long wave Capricorn cycles set into motion, one of which will last through 2053. That January saw Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all conjunct Pluto in Capricorn, setting long cycles into motion.
However,2020 also brought Mars conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius in March, which primed the pump for the Grand Mutation at 1 Aquarius in December 2020. So we have competing long wave cycles wherever we have the last decan of Capricorn and the first degree of Aquarius.
We will have major Capricorn cycles in play till 2053 as a result of Saturn conjuncting Pluto in late Capricorn in January 2020. However, the recent Jupiter conjunct Saturn set long wave Aquarian cycles in motion through 2040. Look to your charts for where you have late Capricorn and early Aquarius, since that area of your chart and life will be most active in the coming decades.
Another crucial shift began in February 2024 with Mars conjunct Pluto at 1 Aquarius, again boosting the influence of that degree. Mars makes another conjunction with Pluto in early Aquarius in 2026 as we turn the corner and enter the Spring of the 21st century. Mars will continue to activate Pluto in Aquarius every two years after that, with a major shift happening when Jupiter conjuncts Pluto at the Angel degree in February 2033, launching a 12 year Aquarian expansion.
Jupiter expands what it touches, and Saturn crystallizes things into forms. So the recent Jupiter/Saturn transit of Aquarius has already set some Aquarian structures into play which will be a part of life during the coming decades. These will take on new forms each year when the inner planets transit Aquarius and conjunct Pluto, as well as every two years when Mars conjuncts Pluto. Add Jupiter conjunct Pluto at 15 Aquarius in 2033, and it’s easy to see our Aquarius sectors are being highly stimulated for the next 21 years!
We’ve all had our Aquarius responses re-shaped these past 4 years, and now have a sense of the contribution we can make to the emerging new life, as well as learned how to manage our energies so we can utilize spiritual power effectively. That’s been the big picture of the past 3 years, where we have matured into some level of new and broader spiritual understanding and expression.
Tomorrow in part 2 we’ll discuss the qualities of Pluto in Aquarius and how they’re different from Pluto in Capricorn, what Dane Rudhyar and Marc Edmund Jones had to say about Pluto in Aquarius, and some likely developments to come as we move out of the old materialism and into the era of “electromagnetic remembrance.” See you then!
