Bastnaesite occurs in pegmatites near Pikes Peak, Colo. and with fluorite in Lincoln County, New Mexico; it is commercially mined at Mountain Pass, Calif.

Bastnaesite Gem Quality

History

Bastnaesite is a common mineral. It is, nevertheless, extremely rare in gem quality. Bastnaesite was discovered at the Bastnas mines in Sweden in 1841 and was given the name Bastnaesite.

Warm tones ranging from honey yellow to reddish brown characterise it.

The appearance of its crystals ranges from transparent to translucent. Industry values bastnaesite as a rare-earth element source.

Small quantities of gem-quality bastnaesite have been discovered all over the world. It is difficult to cut because it is a relatively soft mineral, however, its high refractive index (i.e., high brilliance and fire), combined with its rarity, make it an exciting gem to own.

A yellow to brown mineral consisting of a fluoride and carbonate of cerium and other rare earth metals.

It ranges in colour from wax-yellow to reddish-brown. Bastnaesite is commonly associated with other rare-earth-bearing minerals such as allanite, cerite, and tysonite.

Care

This stone is a 4 - 5 on the Mohs scale, so be sure to treat it with care. Other stones will scratch it, so it's wise to store it separately or wrapped in a protective cloth.
