Last Quarter Moon Grand Cross Shift

January 9th ~ 16th
Most of us think of ourselves as standing wearily and helplessly at the center of a circle bristling with tasks, burdens, problems, annoyances, and responsibilities rushing in upon us. At every moment, we have a dozen different things to do, a dozen problems to solve, a dozen strains to endure. We see ourselves as overdriven, overburdened, and overtired. This is a common mental picture — and it is totally false. No one among us, however crowded their life, actually lives this way. What is the true picture of your life? Imagine there is an hourglass on your desk. Connecting the bowl at the top with the bowl at the bottom is a tube so thin that only one grain of sand can pass through at a time. That is the true picture of your life, even on a super-busy day. The crowded hours come to you one moment at a time. That is the only way they can come. A day may bring many tasks, problems, and strains, but invariably they arrive in single file. You want to gain emotional poise? Remember the hourglass — the grains of sand dropping one by one. ~ James Gordon Gilkey
Moments That Change Everything
There are small moments that can also become tremendous turning points in our lives. These moments can be fleeting. A word. A comment. A diagnosis. A brief meeting. Momentary — yet layered with backstories and consequences that can change everything. This Last Quarter Moon on Saturday appears to be one of those moments. As we wind down the monthly lunar cycle at the Last Quarter Moon, insights gathered since the Full Moon on the 3rd begin to settle. Based on what has been revealed or made known, we clear the slate and prepare for the next steps. If something has become irrelevant, this is when we lay old notions to rest, creating space for new ideas, awarenesses, and plans to take root. What makes this phase unusual is that as it perfects on Saturday at 20° Libra, it forms a Grand Cross with several planets, as well as the centaur Chiron. The Weight of a Cardinal Grand Cross
A Cardinal Grand Cross is difficult to ignore. Powerful and encompassing, it stretches across the zodiac so that almost everyone will feel its tremor. However, the Moon is fleeting, and this particular Grand Cross lasts only hours — more like a quake than a collapse. Yet it is precisely this brief tremor that can act as a catalyst for the already stressed T-square (Sun / Venus / Mars opposite Jupiter square Chiron). This T-square, launched at the Full Moon, remains active through January 16. Overwhelming, conflicted, and overextended, it opens old wounds and scatters our focus in every direction. Like a house of cards, even a momentary shake can upend what once felt stable.
Pragmatism as a Lifeline
With all the inner planets — the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars — in Capricorn, pragmatic realism and common sense are essential for navigating this terrain. When well-laid plans begin to unravel or life feels as though it’s coming apart at the seams, step back and ask yourself: What are my most important priorities right now? What is directly in front of me that needs attention? Also recognize that what feels uncomfortable may be exactly what is required to heal old wounds — physical, emotional, or both. What you are discovering now may provide the courage needed to release what once felt familiar and safe, in order to reach farther ground. Sometimes, finding our true place and purpose requires stepping away from old beliefs and outdated expectations.
Chiron, Jupiter, and the Courage to Be True
Chiron is nearing the end of its journey through Aries this year. If Chiron in Aries marked the birth of a soul journey over the past seven years, it also involved releasing soul contracts that no longer align with who you are becoming. This includes letting go of patterns such as sacrificing your needs just to belong, or shaping your life around the expectations and judgments of others instead of trusting your own inner knowing. Meanwhile, Jupiter retrograde in Cancer asks for the courage to live by your deepest truths — even if doing so risks judgment or exclusion. It calls you to follow your conscience and honor your most authentic beliefs.
“In a futile attempt to erase our past, we deprive the community of our healing gift. If we conceal our wounds out of fear and shame, our inner darkness can neither be illuminated nor become a light for others.” — Brennan Manning, The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging
