Can You Overdose On CBD?

Can You Overdose On CBD?

CBD oil has been known to help people to get relief from a wide variety of illnesses. However, when we take anything for relief, it is vital to know whether or not it is a lethal dose. For instance, accidentally taking too many sleeping pills could result in not waking up. But then again, the question arises, can you overdose CBD?

According to the 2017 report, over 72,000 Americans died that year because of an overdose of a drug. However, the drug taken was illicit.

Cannabidiol or CBD – An Overview

In the entire cannabis industry, in the recent past, cannabidiol or CBD has become one of the most popular product categories. From local coffee shops to legal marijuana dispensaries – it can be found everywhere. Despite gaining popularity, still, there is a lot of confusion about what CBD is and does it affect humans?

So, the short answer to the question whether or not you can overdose CBD is NO. Because till date no evidence has ever suggested that you can overdose on the non-intoxicating cannabinoid CBD. So far, researchers have identified a large list of health benefits and therapeutic uses of CBD. In general, CBD is recognized for a number of anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and neuroprotective qualities, many of which can have positive effects on a broad range of health conditions.

But it is always advised to not only look for the positive sides but also the potential side effects that may accompany it.

How Does CBD Work In Our Body?

Body’s Endocannabinoid System – Unlike THC, CBD is neither psychotropic nor does it produce intoxication or euphoria. According to many studies, ECS helps regulate brain function, immune, mood, sleep, stress, pain and inflammation. ECS receptors are located all across the body and are one of the vital signalling channels for how the body responds to stimuli.

In addition to the naturally occurring cannabinoids in the body, those derived from plants can also act on the endocannabinoid system. When a person consumes CBD, it interacts with the ECS receptors throughout the body.

Specifically, CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors. In an indirect way, CBD act on these receptors, which in turn, moderate the signals sent to the brain. As a result, it minimizes unnecessary pain or inflammation.

Works With The Brain – CBD also positively impact the intake and flow of chemicals in the brain. CBD is also capable to interact with dopamine receptors. They play a major role in regulating many aspects of cognition, behavior, including reward seeking behavior and motivation. This means that CBD has the ability to influence either opioid or dopamine receptors.

In turn, it can be effective in lessening the drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms. All in all, it helps with the treatment of addiction. However, we can’t say for sure at this point; more research on CBD’s interactions with the opioid and dopamine receptor systems is still needed.

No Withdrawal Symptoms – In accordance to the report published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, researchers found that patients treated with cannabidiol (CBD) reported lower cravings for heroin or other opioids than did patients who were either given a placebo or no treatment at all.

CBD is capable enough to dampen that [craving] and does not have any no withdrawal symptoms. It can greatly reduce the chance of relapse and overdose risk. Still, the results are far from definitive — the researchers did not examine whether CBD actually prevents drug-relapse.

Can You Build Tolerance On CBD?

The major reason why a few prescribed and non prescribed drugs can prove to be dangerous is that you build a tolerance to them. Seldom it happens, when we as humans think that the dosage that we were taking is no longer effective, we automatically increase the amount. But, this, in turn, can prove to fatal and might lead to death.

Now, the question that might pop up us “how many gummies should I eat?” And, “what should I do if I build a tolerance to them?” As such, there is no perfect answer. However, according to the studies, it has been proved that no more there is a need for people to build a tolerance for CBD based products. There are people who have been consuming for years, but they didn’t ever face a problem with building a tolerance to CBD. But, this would add to the difficulty of a CBD overdose.

To do away with the tolerance if by chance anyone builds it, people have decided to change their assigned serving schedule, take short breaks or they will take CBD only when they need to treat some specific symptoms.

Addiction and Overdose

It has been widely accepted by the experts that a CBD overdose is impossible.

According to the report published by the World Health Organization CBD is not associated with abuse potential. As a result, it can be concluded that an overdose on CBD alone is pretty unlikely.

Additionally, as per the National Cancer Institute, “Because cannabinoid receptors, unlike opioid receptors, are not located in the brainstem areas controlling respiration, there does not occur the problem of overdose from Cannabis and cannabinoids do not occur.”

Although all users do not experience, yet CBD does have some side effects, such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Lethargy
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Cottonmouth

But it is always advised to monitor your own CBD closely and consult with a medical professional if you have any questions or you face any problem.  One study done in 2011 indicated that doses of CBD up to 1,500 mg per day were well tolerated in humans.

Does This Mean That CBD Is Safe?

Given the fact that CBD is both non additive as well as non toxic, it’s a green signal for you to try it for yourself without worrying about any side effects or qualms. It’s a true and undeniable fact that CBD is generally safe.

However, while shopping for CBD it is recommended to check that it has been derived from hemp and contains less than 0.3% THC. This can be verified by searching for third-party lab reports. Fortunately, the majority of CBD sellers are reputable and trustworthy. Nevertheless, it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your health.

Bottom Line

The answer to the question: Can you overdose CBD? Considering the fact that zero cases have been reported, the chances are very less. However, not all products are created equal. It is always advised to go with the company and brand name you can trust. Always look for the product that is organic and has not been exposed to pesticides or chemicals. Avoid additives or unnecessary ingredients. Look for a full-spectrum product to ensure you get all of the benefits possible in one.
